Learn how to use custom pages to set up a bio and listing of available plays

Playwright Directory

A directory of playwrights is now available from AATE’s homepage. Visitors can view the list and click on a hyperlink to your email address. AATE members, when logged in, can click on a hyperlink to your name and be redirected to your bio page and custom pages that you’ll create.

This tutorial will show you how.

Adding a photo

After logging on to the AATE website, you’ll enter your Profile Page. The first step is to add a profile picture.

Scroll your cursor over the photo image and an icon and text box will appear (see inset below). Click on the icon to add your photo.

Click on the “Choose File” box, and you can download a photo or graphic image from your hard drive. Then click the “Submit” button.

Congratulations! Your photo should now appear in this space.

Hiding personal information

Next you’ll edit your member profile and the information other AATE members will see when they visit your page.

Click on “Manage Profile”. On the following screen, click on “Edit Bio” under Information & Settings.

All the information you entered during registration will appear on this site. To prevent other AATE members from viewing personal information you don’t wish to share, simply click on the icon and change the setting from Members Only (Visible Only to Members) to Private (Not Visible in Profile).

Note: Please do not delete or remove any of these fields, as AATE staff will not be able to contact you!

When you finish selecting all the fields you do not want visible to other members visiting your profile, click on the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the screen.

Our colleague John Doe didn’t want to share his home address or telephone number with other members. After changing these settings from Members Only (Visible Only to Members) to Private (Not Visible in Profile) , only his professional information is available to other members.

Designing personal web pages

AATE members can create up to 10 personal web pages that can be viewed by other members and hyperlinked to external sites. For playwrights, you can design a professional bio page, as well as a page featuring available plays. To get started, click on “Manage Profile” and, on the following screen, click on “Pages” under Content & Features.

Let’s start with the bio page. Click on “Add New Page”. On the following screen, type “Playwright Bio” in the Page Title field and hit return.

Playwright Bio now appears as one of your pages. To add content, click on the pencil and paper icon.

The URL address for your new page now appears in the Permalink field.

You can allow members to bookmark or rate your page by clicking on the designated radio buttons. You can also embed another page by pasting the URL of any RSS 2.0 compliant XML feed (e.g. Facebook).

Content can be added through the WYSIWYG editor. You can paste your copy directly from Microsoft Word using the clipboard option, or simply type in the copy you want to appear. Once the text has been entered, you can add hyperlinks, increase font sizes, insert videos and more.

We’ll review some basic features in the following slides.

To increase the font size, highlight the copy you want to change and click on the increase font size icon from the toolbar. In this example, we’ll increase the font two sizes larger.

The text now appears in the larger font you selected. You can also bold the text by highlighting the text and clicking on the bold icon. Most of these features work similarly to Microsoft Word.

To add a photograph, place your cursor in front of the text where you want your picture to appear. Navigate to the Insert Tab and click on the Image icon.

This feature does not allow you to download from your hard drive, but you can enter the URL of any image in the public domain.

In this example, John is selecting a photograph that appeared in AATE’s Curtain Call. Simply right click on the photograph and select “Copy Image URL”. Place your cursor on the Source field and right click to highlight Paste from the drop down menu.

The URL will now appear in the Source field. You can give your image a name by filling out the Title field, and adjust how the photograph will appear on your web page by clicking on the arrow buttons associated with the Alignment field.

In this example, John wants his photo to appear to the left of his name, so scroll down and click on “left” from the drop down box.

Next, you’ll probably need to resize the photo so it fits on the page. Depending on whether your photo is vertical or horizontal, 125 x 165 pixels (vertical) or 165 x 125 pixels (horizontal) is a standard size.

Click on the reset button and then click the insert button.

John’s image now appears next to his name.

You can also hyperlink email addresses by highlighting the copy and clicking on the hyperlink icon

Type the email address in the Source field and select mailto: from the drop down menu. Then click on the insert button. On the following screen, click ok.

John’s bio now includes a hyperlink to his email address.

Depending on your skill level, you can also use html source code to create your custom page. Click on the Advanced tab, then the html button to access this feature. Below is the source code for John Doe’s bio.

Don’t forget to save your work by clicking on the “Submit” button. You can save your changes and continue working by clicking on the “Submit & Continue Editing” button.

Have fun in designing your Playwright Bio page, and don’t worry. You can always delete it and start over.

To set up a custom page for available plays, click on “Manage Profile” and “Pages” under Content & Features from the following screen.

Click on “Add New Page”. On the following screen, type “Available Plays” in the Page Title field and hit return.

Available Plays now appears as one of your pages. To add content or edit this page, click on the pencil and paper icon to access the WYSIWYG editor function.

The magnifying glass icon allows you to view the contents of the page. If you need to make changes, click on the Edit This Page button.

Managing multiple web pages

Because your personal pages will be linked to the Playwright Network Directory, we ask that you label your bio—Playwright Bio—and your list of plays—Available Plays. To ensure consistency in how they will appear on each playwright’s profile page, we ask that they appear in the following order: Playwright Bio Available Plays Any other custom pages you choose to create for yourself can be ordered after the Playwright Bio and Available Plays pages. You can set the sort order by typing the corresponding number for how they will appear on the screen and clicking “Update Sort Indexes”.

Linking to the directory

The last step in creating a profile page that links to the Playwright Network Directory is setting up the URL we’ll connect to.

Click on “Manage Profile” and “Edit Bio” under Information & Settings on the following screen.

To create your personalized URL, click on “create a personalized url”. Follow the instructions on the screen to create an alias. In this example, John Doe typed in the alias “johndoe” and clicked on the Submit button.

Playwrights who have created a bio and a personalized URL will be listed as a hyperlink on the directory. Currently, this is not a dynamic list (meaning that the database pulls and refreshes this information each time the page is displayed); it is created manually by staff on a monthly basis. A date stamp will appear at the bottom of the list., letting you know the last day it was updated.
