Health
Never, ever drink the water from the
faucet. Bottled water is cheap and easy to
get.
Do not eat fruits that you can’t peel.
Be prepared for stomach bugs.
Pepto is your friend.
Ask your doctor about a prescription of
antibiotics.
Be up-to-date on your usual vaccinations.
Also recommended are vaccinations for
Hepatitis A, Typhoid and Yellow Fever.
Safety
Always take the business card from the hotel with you. It has the
name, address, and phone number of the hotel for taxi drivers.
Always go out in groups of 2 or more.
Ask the hotel to arrange a taxi for you, and travel with a guy in
each taxi.
Leave your passport at the hotel. Carry a color photocopy of your
passport and your driver’s license with you.
Do not go anywhere near drugs in Peru. Don’t think that the
authorities will let you off the hook because you’re an American.
Peru is generally safe, but there is still pick-pocket crime. Don't
carry too much money around at once, don’t flaunt valuables, and
don’t leave your purse or camera unattended.
What to Pack
Checked Luggage: check one bag up to 50 lbs.
Also allowed one carry-on and one purse/backpack.
What to Pack
ATM Card and a back-up credit card. ATMs are
everywhere in Peru-- they're fast, easy, and convenient.
A photocopy of your passport and information page, kept
separate from your passport.
Driver’s License as an extra ID
Travel battery-operated alarm clock or cell phone with an
alarm.
Camera, with back-up memory card and batteries and
battery charger.
Consider bringing your laptop or tablet, as we expect to
have wireless internet access in our hotels.
What to Pack
Necessary prescription medicines and the chemical
names in case you need a refill.
Women should bring their own feminine supplies.
Ear plugs, especially if you’re a light sleeper.
Contact lens solution.
Insect Repellent!
Bandaids
Kleenex mini-packs
Zip-lock bags to keep things dry
Weather Report
We will be in Peru during their winter, and to
the Peruvians the weather is quite cold, and
people will be wearing sweaters and jackets.
Lima and the Coast: High of 70, low of 60.
Occasional mist.
Puerto Maldonado and the Rainforest: hot
and humid, with high of 85 degrees, low of 65
degrees. Daily rain.
Cusco and the Andes Highlands. 75 and
sunny (day), low 35 at night. Very dry.
Clothes
up to 12 days of underclothes. (Pack 11).
2 short-sleeve shirts (e.g. polo, button-front shirts,
blouses)
4 long-sleeve shirts (e.g. polo, button-front shirts,
blouses)
2 heavier long-sleeved t-shirts or light-weight
sweaters
2 pairs of light-weight jeans or khakis
1 pair of fast-drying pants (like Columbia sportswear)
Clothes
2 pairs of shorts
1 swim-suit
1 medium weight jacket or polar-tec
1 pair of hiking boots
1 pair of comfortable walking shoes
A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Electricity
Same plugs as the US
Different Voltage (220)
Battery Chargers (phones, cameras, iPads)
are dual voltage
More Suggestions
Some of the hotels will have hairdryers, but we might
not be able to rely on this. If you bring a hairdryer
from home, you'll need a voltage converter.
Go in with your friends and spit up the things you’re
bringing—not everyone needs an entire bottle of
sunscreen. Share hairdryers, travel alarms, books,
entertainment.
Check your plan for foreign usage and international
calling costs before you use your phone. Use Skype
or Facetime instead.
Money
The Peruvian currency is called the Neuvo Sol, or just
the sol. Plural is soles. The symbol is S/. There are
about 3 soles to the dollar.
Money
If you have a UWO credit union account, you can use
ATMs in Peru six times a month with no fee. In my
experience, Peruvian ATMS do not charge you an
additional fee.
You’ll get a better deal with cash, since both the store
and the credit card company can assess a fee
(sometimes up to 8%).
Do not get Peruvian Money before you go
Do not bring traveller’s checks
You can spend US dollars in Peru (bring new small
bills).
How Much Money will I need?
17 lunches ($5) and 17 dinners ($10).
Dune buggy tour is $25
Alpaca Sweater $20
Other souvenirs: alpaca hats, scarves,
blankets, dolls, pottery, jewelry…
