Aims of the presentation
To discuss the process of designing
an academic skills course for Pre
Registration nurses in terms of:
• decisions when agreeing the
course design
• deciding on a mode of delivery
• measuring success
Curriculum design
Choices:
• separate
• integrated
• semi integrated
models of delivery
Assumptions underpinning
the models
• Separate: designed to support
non traditional learners, that is
mixed in terms of age, cultural
and linguistic background etc.
• Integrated: HE is a complex
social and cognitive process of
discovering and mastering and
ALL students benefit from
learning this
Our analysis
• All student will benefit
• Some will require more guidance
and practice than others
• Conversely more able students
need to be challenged and
motivated
Structure of the course
Blended approach of:
• Main hall lectures x 4
• Small group face to face
meetings x 2
• Web CT for on line materials,
activities and feedback
• site looks like this.........(link)

Challenges of such design
•developing a growing awareness
of self as learner
•communicating th expectation of
University in a supportive way
•avoiding 'overwhelming' the
student as opposed to supporting
them.
