Standardized Tests

 Assessments given to many students under the same conditions and scoring procedures  Achievement (content; ex: Terra Nova)  Diagnostic (strengths/weaknesses)  Intelligence (abstract reasoning/problem solving)  Aptitude (potential for learning)

Descriptive Statistics

 Frequency Distribution - # at each score  Mean – average  Mode – most frequent score  Median – middle score  Range – distance between highest and lowest score  Standard Deviation – variability of scores

Percentages vs. Percentiles

 Percentage - # of correct items compared to the total number of items  Percentile – ranking that compares one student to all the others that have taken the assessment
