What is accreditation for local

• The goal of the voluntary national accreditation
program is to improve and protect the health of the
public by advancing the quality and performance of
state and local public health departments.

This health department will be evaluated
by the National Public Health
Accreditation Board (PHAB) standards for

Why do we need accreditation?
• Health departments can no longer afford to not be recognized
by the public
– Only if our activities are better understood by the public will
our functions be appreciated and valued
• Public health MUST begin to cohesively work together as a
system rather than separate counties
– The abilities of a health department grow the more contacts
can be made with system partners
• High performance and continuous quality improvement
– In these economic times, it is becoming increasingly vital to
show more bang for the buck and continuously improve
health department functions
