Global Policy for Allocation of IPv6 Address Space
• This document describes the policy governing
the allocation of IPv6 address space from the
IANA to the Regional Internet Registries
(RIRs).
• The main points of proposal are:
1.The unit of IPv6 allocation (and therefore the
minimum IPv6 allocation) from IANA to an RIR
is a /12
4
Global Policy for Allocation of IPv6 Address Space
• 2.The IANA will allocate sufficient IPv6 address
space to the RIRs to support their registration
needs for at least an 18 month period.
• 3. The IANA will allow for the RIRs to apply their
own respective chosen allocation and
reservation strategies
5
Global Policy for Allocation of IPv6 Address Space
• 4 RIRs have adopted the second version of
this proposal
• 5 June 2006 , it was submitted to the ASO AC
by EC of NRO and adopted by the ASO AC on
12 July 2006.
• Now it was submitted to ICANN for comments
6
Global Policy for Allocation of IPv6 Address Space
• Address Council’s opinion is:
The proposed is a well-crafted policy that fulfills
the real need to govern IPv6 address allocation
at the very highest level in a manner that
ensures sufficient space will be allocated to all
regions while limiting wasteful practices and
stemming routing table growth.
