• The Port of Baltimore set a record high in FY 2013 for the
amount of cargo moved; from 9.33 million tons in FY 2012 to
9.55 million tons in FY 2013
• General Cargo was up 4.6 percent in June 2013 compared to
June of 2012
January 12, 2010 – Ports America Chesapeake signed a 50-year lease
concession with the Maryland Port Administration (MPA to operate Seagirt
Marine Terminal
• 50 foot channel existing
• 7 post panamax cranes AND 4
super post panamax cranes
• Berth 4 is dredged to 50 feet to
accommodate the new
panamax vessels
• Port of Baltimore is served by
two Class I Railroads, CSX and
Norfolk Southern – both of
which service industrial parks in
Harford County
• The Panama Canal is currently being expanded to accommodate
larger vessels that typically only called West Coast ports.
• A series of new locks are being constructed to handle vessels as
large 12,600 TEUs.
• Increased capabilities that afford economies of scale will
increase the percent of Asian cargo moving all water to the US
East Coast.
• Larger vessels calling the US East Coast will increase the market
penetration significantly compared to the vessels calling East
Coast ports today.
• Baltimore will be one of the few East Coast ports that will be
able to accommodate the new class of vessels with its channel
and berth depth as well as its terminal capacity and expansion.
