Value of RDA
Resource Description and Access or RDA
• is the standard that replaces the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR)
• is a web-based tool
RDA offers
• Improved description of digital resources, unpublished resources and
resources with multiple characteristics
• More guidance on the creation of authority headings
• Compatibility with a range of encoding schema
• Clearly defined data elements and improved granularity
• Opportunities for better catalogue displays and navigation
• Opportunities for more efficient data creation
US testing of RDA’s goals
Goals that were met
• Provide a consistent, flexible and extensible framework for all types of
resources and all types of content
• Be independent of the format, medium, or system used to store or
communicate the data
Goals that were mostly or partially met
• Be compatible with internationally established principles and standards
• Enable users to find, identify, select, and obtain resources appropriate to their
information needs
• Be compatible with descriptions and access points in existing catalogues and
databases
• Be readily adaptable to newly emerging database structures
Outcomes of the test
‘We believe that the long-term benefits of adopting RDA will be worth the short
term anxieties and costs… [You may ask] if this is the time to make a dramatic
change in cataloging. Our collective answer is that libraries must create linkages to
all other information resources in this Web environment. We must begin now.
Indefinite delay in implementation simply means a delay in our effective
relationships with the broader information community.’

Questions relating to systems changes

implementation?
• Will I need to convert our existing records?
• What relationship will there be between RDA Toolkit and my library system?
• Will changes to catalogue displays be required?
• How do I keep informed?
