Romans 6:1-7
“But where sin
abounded, grace did
much more abound:”
Romans 5:20
What shall we say
then? Shall we
continue in sin, that
grace may abound?
Rom. 6:1
I. God Forbids It - v. 2
“God forbid. How shall we,
that are dead to sin, live any
longer therein?”
Let it not be
Perish the thought
By no means
It may not be
“dead to sin”
Cease to live in sin
Paul died to sin
Obituaries list the names of
people who have died.
Repentance demands death
to sin
Therefore put to death
your members which are
on the earth: fornication,
uncleanness, passion, evil
desire, and covetousness,
which is idolatry.
Col. 3:5
God has forbidden sin
 no exceptions
 no special license to sin
“The soul who sins shall die”
Ezek 18:4
“The wages of sin is death”
Romans 6:23
I. God Forbids It - v. 2
II. Knowledge Forbids It - v.3
“Know ye not, that so many of
us as were baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into his
death?”
“Or are ye ignorant”
Therefore if any man be in
Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away;
behold, all things are
become new.
II Cor. 5:17
“Baptized into His death”
Old self died to sin
Baptism puts us into Christ
He died for our sins
We die to sin
II. Knowledge Forbids It - v.3
III. The Christian’s
Resurrection forbids It-v.4-5
“Therefore we are buried with
him by baptism into death: that
like as Christ was raised up
from the dead by the glory of
the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.”
“Buried by baptism”
Baptism is a burial, immersion
Momentarily buried in water
Christ died on Calvary
We die to our sins
Baptism is end of a life of sin
“Christ raised”
God raised Him
We are raised from baptism
To walk no more in sin
A new life - different
“For if we have been planted
together in the likeness of his
death, we shall be also in the
likeness of his resurrection:”
V.5
Planted = united in death
United also in resurrection
No !
We have died and been
resurrected to a new
way of life.
IV. The Sinner’s
Crucifixion forbids It - v.6-7
6. Knowing this, that our old man
is crucified with him, that the
body of sin might be destroyed,
that henceforth we should not
serve sin.
7. For he that is dead is freed
from sin.
“old man crucified with Him”
Former self was sinful
Gal. 2:20
Eph. 4:22-24
Put off the old man
Put on the new man
“body of sin destroyed”
Old body is dead
Col. 3:9
Every time a person
becomes a Christian, a
sinner dies
No longer a slave to sin
“dead is freed from sin”
Released, delivered from sin
Died with Christ
Can no longer live in sin
“crucified with Christ”
Crucifixion is slow, painful
No easy way to separate from
that old man of sin
Slow and painful
Sin must be destroyed
1.Forasmuch then as Christ hath
suffered for us in the flesh, arm
yourselves likewise with the
same mind: for he that hath
suffered in the flesh hath ceased
from sin;
2. That he no longer should live
the rest of his time in the flesh to
the lusts of men, but to the will
of God.
Question asked in v. 1
