• 1-3: Everyone’s problem
– The Law requires righteousness
– No one is righteous
– On Judgment Day you will die
• 3-5 How your problem is resolved
– By grace through faith you trust that
– Christ paid the penalty for your unrighteousness
– Christ covers you with His righteousness
– You are secure and safe in Christ
• 6-8 After your problem is resolved
– What about the Law now?
TRUTH/QUESTION/ANSWER
• 5:20 Now the law came in to increase the
trespass, but where sin increased, grace
abounded all the more
• 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue
in sin that grace may abound?
6:2 By no means! You are united to Christ!
• 6:14 For sin will have no dominion over you,
since you are not under law but under grace.
• 6:15 What then? Are we to sin because we are
not under law but under grace?
By no means! You have a new master!
Deuteronomy 30:15 “See, I have set before you
today life and good, death and evil. 16 If you
obey the commandments of the LORD your God
that I command you today, by loving the LORD
your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping
his commandments and his statutes and his
rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the
LORD your God will bless you in the land that
you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But
if your heart turns away, and you will not hear,
but are drawn away to worship other gods and
serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you
shall surely perish.
• 7:1 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am
speaking to those who know the law—that
the law is binding on a person only as long as
he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by
law to her husband while he lives, but if her
husband dies she is released from the law of
marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an
adulteress if she lives with another man while
her husband is alive. But if her husband dies,
she is free from that law, and if she marries
another man she is not an adulteress.
• 7:4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died
to the law through the body of Christ, so that
you may belong to another, to him who has
been raised from the dead, in order that we
may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were
living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused
by the law, were at work in our members to
bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are
released from the law, having died to that
which held us captive, so that we serve in the
new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of
the written code.
PRINCIPLE
• 7:1 Or do you not know,
brothers—for I am speaking to
those who know the law—that
the law is binding on a person
only as long as he lives?
ILLUSTRATION
• 7:2 For a married woman is bound by law
to her husband while he lives, but if her
husband dies she is released from the
law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will
be called an adulteress if she lives with
another man while her husband is alive.
But if her husband dies, she is free from
that law, and if she marries another man
she is not an adulteress.
APPLICATION
• 7:4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have
died to the law through the body of
Christ, so that you may belong to
another, to him who has been raised
from the dead, in order that we may bear
fruit for God.
THEN – BUT NOW
• 7:5 For while we were living in the flesh,
our sinful passions, aroused by the law,
were at work in our members to bear
fruit for death. 6 But now we are
released from the law, having died to
that which held us captive, so that we
serve in the new way of the Spirit and
not in the old way of the written code.
NEW COVENANT
Jeremiah 31:31 “Behold, the days are coming,
declares the LORD, when I will make a new
covenant with the house of Israel and the house of
Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with
their fathers on the day when I took them by the
hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my
covenant that they broke, though I was their
husband, declares the LORD. 33 But this is the
covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my
law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.
And I will be their God, and they shall be my
people.
NEW COVENANT
Ezekiel 36:26 And I will give you a new
heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.
And I will remove the heart of stone from
your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and
cause you to walk in my statutes and be
careful to obey my rules.
Galatians 5:1 For freedom Christ has set us free;
stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to
a yoke of slavery. 4 You are severed from Christ,
you who would be justified by the law; you have
fallen away from grace. 13 For you were called
to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your
freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but
through love serve one another. 14 For the
whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love
your neighbor as yourself.”
THEN – BUT NOW
• 7:5 For while we were living in the flesh,
our sinful passions, aroused by the law,
were at work in our members to bear
fruit for death. 6 But now we are
released from the law, having died to
that which held us captive, so that we
serve in the new way of the Spirit and
not in the old way of the written code.
• Zechariah 4:6 Then he said to me,
“This is the word of the LORD to
Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by
power, but by my Spirit, says the
LORD of hosts.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, selfcontrol; against such things there is no law.
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus
have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let
us also walk by the Spirit.
• 2 Corinthians 3:5 Not that we are
sufficient in ourselves to claim anything
as coming from us, but our sufficiency is
from God, 6 who has made us competent
to be ministers of a new covenant, not of
the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter
kills, but the Spirit gives life.
