Promotoras Comunitarias Training Program Laura Vargas & Silvia Ramirez The mission of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles is to provide convenient and affordable access to a comprehensive range of quality reproductive health care and sexual health information, through patient services, education and advocacy. • Participants will identify three benefits of using a promotora model in promoting LGBT affirming environments within Latino families and community. • Participants will learn about the development, implementation and results of an LGBT Family Acceptance curriculum using the promotora model. • To improve the physical and mental health outcomes of LGBT youth, by increasing Latino family and community support of LGBT people. • To end family rejection and bullying and create a culture of respect within communities and families in Los Angeles County. 4 • 69% of LGBT students feel unsafe @ school • 85 % were verbally harassed • 39% physically harassed • 59% were sexually harassed 6 Students who are vicitimized and discriminated against have … 8 • Homophobia from Latinos. • Racism from LGBT people from other races and ethnicities. • And homophobia and racism from society at large. 9 LGBT people often experience denial of care, inadequate or substandard care. 10 1 out of 3 transgender people have postponed preventative health care due to disrespectful or discriminatory treatment from health care staff. 11 • 1 out of 5 people have been homeless since they first identified as transgender. • In LA, LGBT youth comprise up to 40% of the homeless population.
