Her #1?
Right after diagnosis,
Alyssa’s #1s were:
Her parents
Her teachers
Her school nurse
In Junior High:
“I loved my school nurse in junior high. If
the teachers sucked,
it was nice to have someone at school
to give you support.
“The school nurse is a big part of a
diabetic child’s life,
because they understand the disease
better than the teachers. They are
your medical parent away from home,
quietly making sure that you check your
BG’s and take your insulin, but at the same
time making you more accountable than
your overprotective parents do.
I didn’t need someone telling me
everything little thing,
but I did need to know that if I forgot,
my school nurse was there to remind me.”

YOU ARE!
As a parent,
who’s my #1,
besides her?
YOU ARE!
You are
our hero!
You help us get
through each day,
when you get the
resources for our
child’s care.
You are
our hero!
You allow us some
freedom because we
know we can depend
on you during the
school day.
You are
our hero!

to help you?
JDRF Brand
The word "juvenile" is no longer descriptive of
the disease or those burdened with it. JDRF
market research tells us that, today, 85 percent
of those in the U.S with type 1 diabetes are
adults. We want to communicate that
JDRF is an organization for ALL ages,
and ALL stages of this disease.

TOP RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Discovery of New Hormone
May Impact T1D
The previously unknown hormone,
called betatrophin,
has been found to promote the
natural replication of beta cells.
JDRF’s vice president, cure therapies, Julia Greenstein, Ph.D., states: “It’s still too early
to tell if there would even be any implications for people with type 1 diabetes…[It] is
certainly interesting.”
TOP RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
New Insights into Factors Affecting
T1D Development
JDRF-funded researchers have determined that
early-life exposure to normal gut bacteria
protects against autoimmune disease.
“Our findings suggest potential strategies for using normal gut bacteria to block
progression of insulin-dependent diabetes in kids who have high genetic risk,” says
Jayne Danska, Ph.D., senior scientist in genetics at The Hospital for Sick Children in
Toronto.
TOP RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Pancreas Size Linked to
Type 1 Diabetes Development
Researchers at the University of Florida weighed pancreases
donated to the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with
Diabetes (nPOD) and found that donors at risk of developing T1D
have smaller pancreases and fewer insulin-producing beta cells
than people who are not at risk for disease.
The data obtained suggests that lower pancreas weight may be
attributable to a lower number of insulin-producing beta cells.
TOP RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Using Tiny Particles Helps Reset
the Immune System
A recent JDRF-funded study has confirmed that incorporating
nanoparticles into the antigen-specific immune therapy that
targets only a misguided part of the immune system could help
stop the process that triggers various autoimmune diseases,
including T1D.
The researcher at Northwestern University specifically used this therapy for
the treatment for the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS).
TOP RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
JDRF Forms New Partnership to Develop
Dual-Hormone Infusion Pump
The recent partnership with Tandem Diabetes Care is focused
on developing the world’s first dual-chamber hormone pump
that can deliver 2 injectable hormones simultaneously to help
regulated BG levels. It is hoped that this could be used with
glucagon and Symlin (an analog of the hormone amylin used to
control the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream after
meals).
