Important Notes Participant List files behave differently depending on when they are placed in the Participants folder: - If TurningPoint is already running, the Participant List must be imported even if it already exists in the participants folder.

- If TurningPoint is NOT running when a Participant List is placed in the Participants folder, launching the program effects an automatic import. Whether imported upon starting TurningPoint or afterwards, the Participant List must be selected for students to get points during your presentation,

In this tutorial you will: Place a class roster (Participant List, or .tpp file) in the Participants folder Import the .tpp file if necessary Select the Participant List so that it will store student responses for your presentation (session) Note: Participant Lists are updated periodically during the first few weeks of the semester. Thereafter, you can update the Participant List yourself (see tutorial on Editing a Participant List). Also see Tutorials 17-19 on how to reconcile different rosters.

I. Retrieving a Participant List (.tpp) file from a flash drive (…assumes you have not opened your TurningPoint Presentation (.ppt) file)

After boot-up, plug the flash drive with a copy of your Participant List

(.tpp)

into a USB port on the podium.

At this point, you can open both the window to the Participants folder and to your flash drive.

Then drag & drop to copy the .tpp file into the

Participants

folder. Launch TurningPoint…

To select your new participant list, click the arrow next to the (none) indication, highlight and click on your newly-created Participant List.

The selected Participant List appears in the box.

Begin your presentation; when you poll students, their answers will now be recorded.

You are ready to begin your TP session.

II. Saving a Participant List (.tpp) file attached to an e-mail message directly to your Participant List folder (…assumes you have not opened your TurningPoint Presentation (.ppt) file)

Access your e-mail on the classroom computer; open the message with the attached Participant List (.tpp) file. Click on the icon to download the attachment .

At this prompt, click Save.

Double-click on My Documents

If the Save as File Type box says XML, click the arrow and select All Files.

Next, double-click on the TurningPoint folder.

Then, double-click the Participants folder.

Now, click Save

Finally, click Close: You are returned to your e-mail. Logout of e-mail and launch TurningPoint.

To select your new participant list, click the arrow next to the (none) indication, highlight and click on your newly-created Participant List.

The selected Participant List appears in the box.

Begin your presentation; when you poll students, their answers will now be recorded.

You are ready to begin your TP session.

III. If you already opened TurningPoint, you must first import the Participant List before selecting it…

Click on the arrow next to Participants on the TP toolbar; then click on Import a Participant List.

Browse to where your Participant List (.tpp) file is... In this example, the .tpp file is on a flash drive: double-click on My Computer

…and then on your flash drive, here the removable disk (E).

Then highlight the appropriate .tpp file and click open. You will be returned to your presentation.

To select your new participant list, click the arrow next to the (none) indication, highlight and click on your newly-created Participant List.

The selected Participant List appears in the box.

Begin your presentation; when you poll students, their answers will now be recorded.

You are ready to begin your TP session.

Note: you must select a Participant List to link student names with their responses.

Final Notes:

.tpp files

must

be in the Participants folder of the computer you will use present your lecture.

Always use updated .tpp files to ensure that all students with registered clickers are polled.
