Welcome to School of One
Introduction
Welcome to the School of One summer program. As you know, you have been
selected to help New York City pioneer a new way to learn in school. You are the first
students in the United States to test out this new system, and your mission this
summer is to learn as many new math skills as you can. At the same time, you will
give us information on how well the different parts of the learning environment are
working. Every day you will have a new set of math lessons to complete.
The School of One community is based on respect and responsibility. We ask that
you show respect for yourself, your peers, and your teachers at all times. Remember -you were selected to participate in this program because your teachers believe you
have what it takes to model excellence at all times. We are looking forward to an
exciting summer and hope that you are as well!
Program Overview
Based on the tests you took in June, the School of One team created a math Playlist
for each of you. This Playlist has the math skills that we want you to learn this summer.
Every day, you will study one or two skills from the Playlist and then take a Playlist
Update at the end of each of day.
The next day you will get a new and different schedule. Your classes will take place in
the School of One Mission Room that has been created in the library at M.S. 131. On
the next page, we will take a look at the School of One schedule for this summer:

then take you outside
• If you are going outside, stand silently next to your laptop cart. The
quietest team will go outside first.
• If you are going to advisory, return to your Homeroom – you can play
a game or read a book while waiting for your conference.
• After Lesson 4, return to your Homeroom, take out your laptop, and
wait for your teacher to tell you to start your Playlist Update.
• You must stay until 12:30.
• After you turn in your open-response question, you can go return
your laptop and check out. Once you check out, you can go home or
go to the cafeteria for lunch.

School of One Behavior Guidelines
We want to make
sure that the
School of One
room provides each
student with the
best opportunity to
learn. To the right
are some important
behavior guidelines
to make sure that
happens.
School of One is a
voluntary program.
Students who
cannot abide by
these rules may
lose privileges and
may be no longer
be able to
participate.
BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES
• Be respectful of your teachers and carefully follow their
instructions. They want to help you to learn this summer.
• We are all sharing a small space. So keep your hands and
feet to yourself and NEVER touch a TV screen.
• Keep your voice down. There are lots of students in the room
who are trying to learn in different parts of the room.
• Carry your laptop in a bag or with both hands.
• We want to keep the School of One room neat and clean.
Please do not bring any food, drinks, or gum inside.
• If you need help with a math problem or want to make a
comment, raise your hand. If you need help with your
computer or cannot log in, raise your fist.
• Only use your computer to complete your assigned activity or
as instructed by a teacher.
• Do not share your username or password with anyone else.
• Do not attempt to change your username or password.
• We have plenty of electronics. Please keep all of your
personal electronics at home.

What do I need to do to get ready every day?
Make sure you can check off everything below before you come to the
program each day:
Packing and Prep List for School of One
I have my summer reading book packed in a bag.
I am wearing my School of One t-shirt.
I have one pen and one pencil.
I have my notebook.
I understand my schedule.
My laptop is working properly.
I am calm, focused, and ready to learn!

A Day in the Life of Richard Wu, a School of One Student
Breakfast (8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.)
I get to school early today, so I decide to go to the cafeteria for a quick bite to eat. At around 8:20, I go
upstairs to get my laptop and head to Homeroom.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Homeroom (8:30 a.m.)
I find my laptop in the laptop cart, say hi to my friend Jessica, and go to my Homeroom. I’m on the
Blue Team, so our homeroom is in Staten Island. I sit down at a table near the window and check out
my schedule. I have one Class in Brooklyn, two Cyberlessons that are both in Times Square, and
one Crew at the United Nations. I’m really excited for one of the Cyberlessons because I tried it
yesterday and it really helped me understand fractions. I’m inside today for conferencing, so hopefully
I’ll get to finish the last chapter of my summer reading while I wait to talk to my advisor.
My homeroom teacher announces the team points and it looks like we’re almost 1/2 of the way to
M.S. 131. If we do well on the Playlist Update, we might get a prize tomorrow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lesson 1 (8:40 a.m. to 9:20 a.m.)
Lesson 1 is in Brooklyn and I’m learning about multiplying and dividing fractions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lesson 2 (9:23 a.m. to 10:03 a.m.)
Lesson 2 is in Chelsea Piers, where a cartoon alien helps me to solve problems to review the skills I
learned in Lesson 1.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Break (10:03 a.m. to 10:40 a.m.)
As soon as Lesson 2 is over, I go to my laptop cart and plug in my laptop, making sure the blue light
is on to ensure it is charging. I have advisory, so after a quick trip to the bathroom I go back to Staten
Island. I take out my summer reading book, Holes, but I don’t get much time to read because I’m
second-in-line for my conference. At conference I realize that I’ve made it through more than half my
playlist – not bad, since we’re not even halfway through the summer!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lesson 3 (10:43 a.m. to 11:23 a.m.)
Lesson 3 is on Broadway, but there aren’t any musicals here. Instead it is a computer, headset, and
microphone that allow me to talk to my Cybercoach and get answers to a few questions I had from
Lesson 2.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lesson 4 (11:26 a.m. to 12:06 a.m.)
Lesson 4 is at the Met, which is kind of funny, because I think the Met is an art museum. But there
aren’t any paintings here. This is a lesson with five friends and we practice our fraction skills with a
fun game called “Action Fractions”.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Playlist Update and Checkout (12:10 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.)
After Lesson 4, I go back to my Homeroom in Staten Island. I say a quick hello to Chris, my friend
who’s having lunch with me after the program today, and I sit down to open Acuity. The Playlist
Update isn’t that hard, and the open-response questions weren’t tough either. So I’m thinking I might
have passed this skill on my playlist. After I’m done, I return my laptop to the cart, meet up with Chris,
and we walk home together.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Game
Q: “What is ‘Race to M.S. 131?”
A: Race to M.S. 131 is the game that you are playing all summer long. Here’s the story:
Fifty years ago, four priceless pieces of artwork were locked away in boxes at M.S. 131. As
we were renovating the library for the summer, we discovered the boxes and contacted the
owners. They don’t remember the combination to the four boxes, but there were some math
problems which will reveal the combination. The owners have agreed to give away hundreds
of dollars in prizes as a reward for any team that can figure out the combination to the lock
and return their artwork.
Q: “How do we get the math problems so we can find the combination?”
A: First things first. Your team (Red, Blue, Gold, or Green) and all the other teams will start
out the game outside Manhattan, and you first need to get back to M.S. 131. You must earn
2,000 points to get back to the school. When you reach 100, 1000, and 2000 points, you will
get math clues during Homeroom, so that by the end you have gotten back to M.S. 131 and
also have the right combination. Each morning in Homeroom, we'll give you an update on
where you are on the map.
Q: “How do we get points?”
A:You will be on a team with the other students in your Homeroom, and each time you pass a
skill on your Playlist or you show up on time for the program, you earn points for your team.
