• There are over 15 million people in
England with longer term health
needs
• The proportion of over 65s living with
a chronic condition has risen from
48% in 1972, to 62% in 2002
• Half of all very high intensity users are
aged 75 or over, compared to just over a
quarter of all hospital inpatients
