Key Messages .....
 “Today schooling needs to be much more about ways of
thinking, involving creativity, critical thinking, problemsolving and decision-making.”
 ‘Pakeman found the challenges for improving outcomes
for disadvantaged pupils are varied and there is no “one
size fits all”. So they took a multi-strand approach
together with rigorous tracking and assessment
procedures so any gaps in pupils’ learning are quickly
identified and addressed .’

Pupil Premium: the gap in 2013
 The gap gets wider as pupils get older:
– 19% gap (60%: 79%) in level 4 at 11
– 27% gap (38%: 65%) in 5A-CsEM at 16
 Big variations between schools and between LAs
– Level 4 gap: Newham 4%; Warrington 14%; Cheshire East 19%;
Cheshire West 24%
– GCSE gap: London under 20%; Warrington 30%; Cheshire West 33%;
Cheshire East 38%
– Attainment of PP pupils
• Level 4: Camden 79%; Warrington 69%; Cheshire East 64%; Cheshire
West 59%
• GCSE: Tower Hamlets 63%; Warrington 41%; Cheshire West 37%;
Cheshire East 31%
 Cheshire East is 140th out of 150 LAs for PP learners at KS4
The Priority had to be at Key Stage 4 and working across all our
Secondary Schools
So what has happened in our
Secondary Schools since February ?
 Regular and structured visits to ALL Secondaries by
Kevin Harrison based upon specific areas of need.
 Establishment of PP Network meetings – SMT leads and
Governors. Next meeting 9th June.
 Establishment of Data Managers Meetings – focus on
tracking PP learners.
 Establishment of PP reviews – 2 day review using
external NLEs as identified by National College.
 A range of Pilot projects – Maths Catch Up, PIXL,
 Collection of predicted data for current Year 10 and 11.
 CAMHS Pilot project – dedicated CAMHS staff working in
targeted schools – primary and secondary.
PP Work across Primary Schools:
The Aspirer Teaching Alliance
 Commission led by Ash Grove Academy –
Executive Principal Kevin Simpson.

Why Aspirer ?
 Pupil premium was a major factor in the initial bid
which led us to talks with the LA about helping
coordinate the project.
 Ash Grove has 80% ever 6 children across the
school.
 Been on a journey to ensure PP children make
maximum progress.
 Now PP outperform non PP children in every year
group.
 Kevin’s philosophy is that even though he has a lot
of children in receipt of PP, many of the strategies
they use can be used on much smaller scales.
The Offer ..... 1 : 1 sessions
 Each school will have the opportunity to request
half a day of focused audit, discussion and action
planning around the use of PP money in their
school.
These reviews will be led by:

The Offer ..... Hubs
 Hubs will be theme based (based on the needs of the school)
and will meet once every half term. The Pupil Premium
Champion will be the representative at these meetings.
 The themes may change and evolve over the year
 There will be a focus on innovation and action research –
impact
How will the hubs run? – Approximately 1½ hours
 Session 1 – Feedback from all members of the group
 Session 2 - New research and learning
 Session 3 – Individual action plans to run back at school
 SPECIFIC HUB FOCUSED UPON PP GOVERNORS :
TUESDAY 8th JULY – 6.00 – 7.30 pm at Chimney House Hotel.

We will run CPD sessions across the year linked to the
key priorities set by schools.
