Prospective students may apply for admission during either the Fall
or Spring semester of each school year. This presentation can assist
you in understanding the process for admissions into the UHM
Bachelors of Social Work Program. Please be sure to carefully
review the most current UH Mānoa Catalog, and the School of
Social Work Bulletin before applying for admission.

You will need to complete 2 separate applications.

application fee ($70), official transcripts & related materials

BSW APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Fall admission: FEBRUARY 1ST
Spring (early) admission: OCTOBER 1ST
Your application needs to be complete with all requested
materials before it can be processed for evaluation.
BSW Admission Requirements
To be considered, applicants must:
Have been admitted to the University of Hawai‘i at
Mānoa;
Have completed the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
general education core requirements;
Have completed the knowledge-base courses identified
by the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work with a
grade of C or better;
Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5;
and
Provide evidence of motivation for and commitment to
social work (e.g., personal, volunteer, and/or social work–
related experience).
Required Knowledge Base Courses
PHIL 110 OR 111 – can also use to fulfill FS requirement
Any Psychology course
Any introductory Political Science course
Any Biological Science course emphasizing human biology
(see Approved list of courses - http://www.hawaii.edu/sswork/bswprog.html) – some courses can be “double-dipped” to also fulfill DB
requirement
SW 200 The Field of Social Work – Orientation to the profession
of social work; historical development, values and philosophy, scope and
aims.

FAQS
Does the SSW accept faxed materials? No, we do not accept faxed materials.
Where do I send my completed applications?
Do I have to send my transcripts if I attend a UH system college? No, by
indicating in your application that you have attended a UH system college, the
School of Social Work will be able to retrieve this information from the
Banner system. However, all colleges outside of the UH system requires
official transcripts.
Can I get credit for work experience? No, but be sure to include this
information in your personal statement.
How much time does practicum take? In addition to the Junior Practicum
(SW 391), BSW students are required to complete a Senior practicum
(SW 490–491) during which students must complete a total of 450 hours
at an assigned agency for the academic year.
When will I receive my admission decision from the SSW? Decision letters
are generally sent to students sometime between mid-March through May for
Fall Admission, and between late Oct. through late Nov. for Spring
admissions.
