The Problems of the Week How to set up your students’ logins
The Math Forum @ Drexel - mathforum.org
Before we get started: • Do you teach one class of students?
or • Do you have more than one class of students?
NOTE:
With a school or district membership, you have unlimited classes and unlimited student logins. What will work best for you?
Once you have thought about how many classes you need, what’s the best name? Suggestions:
Smith –math
or
Smith Period 1
or
Smith 5 th Grade

Also, let’s think about your students’ logins: • Do you have a
username convention
to follow?
• Do you have a
password
chosen?
NOTE:
Usually if the students’ usernames are unique it’s easier to have them all have the same password. It has to be
5 characters
and so
math5
or something else that’s easy to remember, works well.

Now that you have thought about: • • •
class
name(s)
usernames
for your students
passwords
for your students we’re ready to get started!

3. Enter your

Let’s think about 1. and then 2. on that page.

9. My sample has two classes listed: Since I just made a new class “Demo 54” to show you how to do this, I’m going to choose it.
10. Next I should read what it explains about
Existing
vs
New
students: I know that my students have not used the PoWs before and so I’m going to start by clicking on
Create New Students.

11. Now my page looks like this: I have my list of students, usernames, and passwords and I start to type them in the field.
Note:
You could copy/paste if you have a comma-separated list from another document.

12.
Here’s how it might look: Note 1: I do NOT recommend that you enter email addresses for students. Note 2: Even though you type students’ last names in to set up their logins, their last names will NOT show publicly on our site. If we display a student’s solution, only their first name and last initial are visible.
Note 3: You can do one student at a time, five students at a time or any number of students you would like!

13. Once I have the information entered, I click the
Preview Students
button and my page looks like this: There are two students’ usernames that I will need to edit so that they are unique. I decide to put a number after each.
Then it is important to click the
Add Students
button!

14. After clicking the
Add Students
button, my page looks like this: Since I only created 5 students at first, I click on the
add more students or classes
link so that I can repeat the process and make logins for the rest of my students.

Now that I’ve finished making all of my students’ logins, I can view the list from
My PoW Work as a Teacher
page. Notice that once you’ve created a class and students, your page has a lot more on it!
On the right side of the page, look for the link to your new class and when you click it, you will see your new student roster.
