Student Lifecycle Management Point of Inquiry Graduation Everything in between Student Lifecycle Management Drexel’s senior leadership and board of trustees agree that to be successful in attracting and retaining students through the entire student lifecycle, we must offer: 1. Quality program (academics) 2. An engaging and rich student experience (academic, social, co-curricular) 3. Value and affordability Student Lifecycle Management Primary Goals: • To protect current and eventually grow Net Tuition Revenue • To increase “right fit” application, and therefore, to increase yield • To maintain or improve student preparedness and ability • To increase retention by ensuring that we continue to enable student success • To improve graduation rate Student Lifecycle Management Committees: • Advising Task Force • Orientation and New Student “Onboarding” • Registration • Advising Technology • Annual Bill Transition • Integrated Communications Student Lifecycle Management The solution is to design the right class, keep the class engaged throughout their time at Drexel, and see them through to graduation. Student Affairs Areas of Concentration Parents Student Development Co-curricular Learning Behavioral Intervention Student Engagement Retention & Persistence Student Support Tied to the DSLPs, DU Strategic Plan and the SLAS Strategic Plan Student Lifecycle Management A recent survey of 271 students who withdrew from Drexel indicates that financial considerations were the most significant—although not the only— factor in their decision. The recommended SLM strategies for recruiting, admitting, and retaining students are designed to mitigate these challenges. Reasons Cited for Withdrawals Primarily Social 9% Primarily Academic 13% Multiple excluding Financial 6% Of the 73% of respondents citing financial issues as contributing to their withdrawal, a roughly even number identified as primary and influencing factors: Primarily Financial 23% Multiple including Financial 50% • Value (“perceived value of the education given the price point”) • Affordability (“ability to secure funding to pay associated costs in attending the university”) Student Lifecycle Management 1. Redesign Drexel’s Selection Process • Focus on academic fit to major • Increase involvement of schools in selection process 2. Implement a Need-based Financial Aid Strategy • Use merit-based scholarships to attract top talent Student Lifecycle Management 3. Enhance Student Services • Enhance academic advising • Remove administrative burdens on students (e.g., Drexel Central) 4. Increase Focus on Student Engagement Student Affairs at Drexel Report to the Drexel Family Association Parents Advisory Council March 30, 2014 David A. Ruth, Ph.D. Dean of Students
