OHSE- GOALS





establish sustainable collaborations between scientists and K-12 school
districts in the State of Ohio;
facilitate sharing of resources and ideas among existing groups to amplify
the outcomes of their efforts in science and engineering outreach;
provide a central enterprise where scientists can test their science education
ideas without needing to start from scratch. For example, OHSE would be a
place where young faculty members writing NSF - CAREER proposals and
established faculty proposing large interdisciplinary research centers could
design, initiate, and operate outreach and engagement activities;
engage active scientists and engineers in the community to participate in K20 science outreach efforts.
serve as a model organizational structure to encourage scientists and
engineers in both the academic and private sectors to group together to
work toward improving science and technology literacy in society.
Approved by Board of Trustees Fall 2008, presented to
National Academy of Sciences in fall 2008.

Wonders of
Our World,
W.O.W.
This is a volunteer program that is now in its 12th year of operation.
This program adopts entire elementary schools for a period of three years.
Teacher professional development workshops are offered to the school
before each unit is brought the school.
Volunteers are similarly trained in workshops. Volunteers must be active
scientists or engineers.
Program: Currently serves three elementary schools with over 100 volunteers

This site allows teachers
and elementary school
teachers to ask burning

questions of experts
(advanced undergraduates,
professional scientists, and
engineers).
This site is currently under
beta site development and
is only available to students

Ohio Science Talent Expansion
Program (OSTEP)


The OSTEP program builds bridges to success in STEM disciplines in
three distinct socio-economic regions of the State of Ohio.
Three community colleges (Columbus State Community College, Stark
State College and Washington State College)
OSTEP-GOALS



Summer Six Week PreCollege Bridge Program: (Math, Science,
Engineering and Writing Courses) The interdisciplinary science course
was accepted and participated in the National Project Kalidescope
program on Interdisciplinary Programs
Mentoring during the academic year (Students trained through National
Mentoring Program)
Shared projects within Chemistry and Physics courses to allow
community college students to interact with OSU students

Bridge program for transfer students

Precollege outreach programs at the Community Colleges
(50 students per year in the OSTEP program. These are all minorities and
first generation students.)




An interactive web-based educational game not-for
profit organization is currently underway.
This collaboration involves the development of an
interactive game that allows K-12 students.
Nanoscience and Technology – NSEC activity
Edheads games typically receive as many as one
million views per year.
