Lewis & Clark Library System “CLeO”: Continuous Learning Opportunities What is “CLeO”? • CLeO: Continuous Learning Opportunities • CLeO is the Lewis & Clark Library System’s solution for continuing education registration and tracking. • CLeO was designed to meet LCLS’ needs for our CE program. Slide 2 / 10 What technology is behind CLeO? • CLeO is powered by Microsoft Active Server pages and a Microsoft Access or mySQL database. • CLeO was designed using these off-the-shelf and available technologies. • CLeO also has a flexible template system (custom written in ASP) that allows other libraries to customize the look. Slide 3 / 10 Ok, so why Microsoft?? • Libraries have to work with what is available. • Traditionally LCLS has used MS products on servers and workstations • Time to “market” required the fastest solution possible which meant less choice and less time available to learn different systems. Slide 4 / 10 So what is the big deal with CLeO? • CLeO changed the way LCLS conducted it’s CE “business”. • CLeO gained statewide attention as a uniform way to handle CE registration and gather statistics. • CLeO was the product of a “cross-functional” work team that produced a product that has helped LCLS think outside the box about online services. • CLeO brought online services closer to our members and taught a few “old dogs new tricks”. Slide 5 / 10 What’s the big deal (continued)? • CLeO brought to life a vision that several past CE coordinators had for the future of CE services at LCLS. • CLeO reduced the work load and time spent manually tracking registrations via e-mail, fax, telephone, and snail mail. • CLeO standardized the entry of events into the CE catalog. • CLeO electronically tracks room usage to prevent double-bookings. Slide 6 / 10 Who is using CLeO? • LCLS has shared CLeO with several of our “sister” library systems in IL. – Prairie Area Library System (Formerly NILS, HTLS, and RBLS) – Rolling Prairie Library System – Shawnee Library System – Alliance Library System – The Illinois State Library Slide 7 / 10 So is CLeO “open source”? • CLeO is “sort of” open source. • Originally CLeO was designed to meet the needs of LCLS, but other Illinois library systems expressed great interest in our solution to CE registration. • CLeO is given freely to libraries and library systems with similar CE needs. • Libraries / Systems using CLeO receive limited support in configuring and maintaining CLeO. • Suggestions are taken and enhancements are added and distributed as time allows and as need requires. Slide 8 / 10 It’s free right? • Yes. CLeO is given freely to any library/system that has a need for it. • Libraries/Systems using CLeO are required to leave the LCLS copyright visible on their CLeO installation and to give due credit for the system. • CLeO is not to be repackaged or sold in any way to a commercial entity or other library / system. Slide 9 / 10 What does CLeO see for the future? • Migration to the Microsoft .NET platform • A truer “N-Tier” application • Full mySQL and SQL support (made easier thru “N-Tier” design) • More user requested features (From both end users and CLeO administrators) Slide 10 / 10
