You can choose to run the Premium Add-On server software on a second physical server. • You can run an instance of Windows Server 20008 R2 Standard technologies on a physical or virtual machine (VM); and if you run on VM, you are allowed to run an additional instance on a physical machine in order to run hardware virtualization software, provide hardware virtualization services, or run software to manage and service operating system environments on the licensed server. • You can run any number of instances of SQL Server 20008 R2 Standard Edition for Small Business in one physical or virtual machine, and it must be joined to the SBS domain. Premium Add-On is similar to a stand-alone Windows Server Standard license. • You may run one instance of the operating system on a physical or virtual machine. • If you run on a virtual machine, you may run an additional instance of the operating system on a physical machine in order to run hardware virtualization software; provide hardware virtualization services; or run software to manage and service operating system environments on the licensed server. When using the SBS Premium Add-On server, you can choose to deploy Server Core as the parent and Server with GUI as a child • The parent can only be used for supporting virtualization. SBS Scenarios: Fully Virtualized Technical Impact • Hardware requirements stay the same as physical • Disk, CPU, RAM • Backup/Restore Plans • Snapshots/Quick Migration not supported in Windows Server 2008 • Live Migration Supported • Fax Service not supported • Detailed setup step-by-step will be on TechNet • Some features change - details next slide Business Impact • • • • Check potential HW savings – ensure you maintain the HW requirements Some flexibility over time when moving between servers Good scenario for small low -load SBS deployments (<10 users) Remember SBS has 40-60% density already before virtualizing! Licensing Required SBS Premium Add-On with the 2nd Server configured as Parent partition, or Hyper-V Server SBS Scenario: Fully Virtualized, cont. Technical Impact • Backup relies on direct attached storage • Create a fixed sized VHD that resides on a separate disk drive • Drive should be external to protect from HW failure • Add the VHD to the child partition as an additional drive • Alternatively USB hard disk drives can be taken offline in the physical device manager and then mounted into the VM as an internal drive • Must copy the answer file to either a virtual floppy disk or a virtual hard disk that is then connected to the VM • COM ports are not virtualized; devices such as UPS, Fax/Modems are impacted • The Windows Server 20008 R2 Fax server role is not supported in a virtual machine SBS Scenario: Presentation Virtualization Technical Impact • Premium Add-On is the ideal server for Remote Desktop Services • SBS Standard Server has RD Gateway installed • Premium Add-On Server has RDS Session Host role capability Business Impact • Simplify management and reduce servicing costs • Provide common user experience increasing usability • Provide outside system access with RWA Licensing Required SBS Premium Add-On with the 2nd Server configured with RDS application mode, RDS users require a RDS CAL.
