There is heaps of different time zones. If we had one
single time zone for Earth afternoon would be the
middle of the day in some places but it would be
morning or evening and the middle of the night in
others.
Since different parts of the earth enter and exit
daylight at different times we need different time
zones.
Slide 4
Time zones are decided by the
members of parliament.
Slide 5
There are 360 different time zones in the world.
Slide 6
This is the Royal Greenwich Observatory in
England. It is the place where all time zones in
the world are measured.
Melbourne is at Greenwich Mean Time +10 hours.
You might see it written as GMT+10.
Slide 7
The country that has the most time zones is
France. It has 12 time zones.
The United States is the runner-up with 11 time
zones, then Russia with 9.
Slide 8
In Melbourne it is 9:26am
In Perth it is 7:26am
What time is it?
In Darwin it is 8:56am
Slide 9
There is an imaginary line on the Earth
called the International date line. This
line changes the date by one day.
Slide 10
A space shuttle can travel around the Earth in
just 90 minutes, so they move through a time
zone every 4 minutes!
Astronauts use their own time zone called
Mission Elapsed Time. They also use Greenwich
Mean Time.

Slide 11
Would it be a good idea to call some one in
Sweden when it’s 5pm in Melbourne?
Yes. It is morning in Sweden when
it is 5pm in Melbourne.
Slide 12
Time zones can make a difference in our lives.
If we need to talk to someone overseas
they might be sleeping.
Slide 13
When my Dad went to Iraq it was different for
us and him. Mum and I wanted to call him but
he was sleeping when we were awake and we
were sleeping when he was awake.
It was very hard.
Slide 14
We get jet lag when we travel through different
time zones, especially when we are flying.
Jet lag makes us very tired.
Slide 15
In summer, we put our clocks forward one hour.
This is so we can enjoy more time in the
evenings when it is still daylight.
