OSHA requires that regular safety inspections and occasional audits be performed to make sure the workplace remains free of hazards that could cause injury or illness.

What is an inspection?

•The inspection examines conditions in the workplace to identify hazards. •Inspections are performed each quarter in October, January, April and July.

An

audit

is then performed to evaluate how well the department is controlling hazards. The audit is performed by the safety committee to ensure continuous improvement.

Who completes the Checklist?

A checklist is required to be completed in each kitchen.

Each Lead (or sub-lead) is required to complete the Quarterly Safety Inspection Checklist.

 The Nutrition Services website  Click on Forms  Under Kitchen Management, click on “Quarterly Inspection Report”  Click “Open” to view the document  Click on File, then select Print

How to complete a successful checklist

Successful inspections involve: •Walking •Talking •Listening •Writing

Walking…

   Walk around the workplace with the checklist. Use the checklist as a guide while also looking for other hazards and unsafe work practices that are likely to cause serious injuries. Focus on hazards rather than rule violations.

Talking & Listening…

If there are other kitchen employees working in the kitchen, talk to them.  Ask about hazards and unsafe conditions  Be concerned and listen carefully Is this safe?

Writing…

   Be sure to include on the checklist The school name The name of person filling out the checklist The school’s phone number

Writing…

Take notes and report all concerns and hazards on the Quarterly Safety Inspection Checklist.

What do you do after the Checklist is completed?

Scan and email the completed checklist to the Safety Committee Chair

What happens after the checklist is submitted?

•The Safety Committee Chair reviews all checklists submitted by schools. •Each concern and hazard is thoroughly investigated and corrected as soon as possible.

•All hazards are reported and presented to the Safety Committee for review.
