Slide 2
Concept
• A dance/fundraiser for LGBTQIAP+ LCPS
students and allies to raise money for the
Wanda Alston Foundation, a DC nonprofit that
provides services to at-risk and homeless
queer youth.
• An opportunity to increase the network of
support for LGBTQIAP+ students in Loudoun
Slide 3
Homelessness within the LGBTQIAP+
Community
• There is an extreme need for safe housing for
LGBTQIAP+ homeless youth throughout the
country
• It has been estimated that as much as 40% of
our nation’s homeless youth identify as LGBT
• This is usually attributed to an intolerant
home environment (runaway or throwaway
youth)
Slide 4
Planning
• From the idea’s inception in January to it’s
realization in June, we have put over 100+
hours into dance preparations
• Fundraising (bake sales, t-shirt sales,
fundraising nights at local restaurants, a
GoFundMe)
• Coordinating with other school GSAs,
primarily through the use of social media
Slide 5
The Dance
• Over 100 students were in attendance
• $1,034 was raised off ticket sales alone
• Decorations were mostly DIY/inexpensive
Slide 6
Slide 7
Some numbers:
• 82% of attendees came from schools heavily
involved in the planning process
• Almost half of attendees were sophomores
• $2,567 raised in total
• After dance costs (DJ, security officers,
decorations, etc.), $1,850 will be going to the
Wanda Alston Foundation
Slide 8
Lessons learned
• In the years to come, focus more time and
energy into fundraising/spreading the word
• A more efficient way of organizing with other
GSA’s than a group message should be
pursued
• An increase in efficiency in general would
greatly benefit the project; the putting in
place of solid committees dedicated to
carrying out certain tasks
Slide 9
Reflections
• Overwhelming support and positive feedback
from attendees
• No apparent negative backlash from anyone in
the community
• It’s important to seek out and utilize any and
all resources available
• Big ideas are worth pursuing; baby steps
aren’t always the best way to enact positive
change and jumpstart community growth
