Access Control (AC)

Operation & Maintenance of the Access Systems ZORA & SUSI
ZORA = ZOne RAdiologique = PS, SPS, LHC Access Systems
O & M – Strong impact on the lab core activities (beam & non-beam periods)
Evolution of the ZORA Access Systems in collaboration with the SSE section
(e.g PS, LHC)

SUSI = SUrveillance de SIte = Site Access Control Systems
Not lab “Core” activity but highly visible to the whole CERN Community
“Traditional” systems with equipped and monitored doors + badge readers
Video surveillance and required recording
Systems recently introduced

electronic locks/cylinders (Salto)
key cabinets (Traka)
Plate recognition (Altaïr)
Pedestrian+bike turnstiles

Alarm Systems (AS)

Fire Detection and Evacuation Systems

Flammable Gas and ODH Detection Systems

CERN Safety Alarm Monitoring – CSAM
CERN Hardwired Alarm Monitoring Network – CHAMN
Critical activity: no CSAM => no access in the concerned area

LHC Exp. SNIFFER

Combined fire and gaz air sampling detection
Critical activity: If SNIFFER not available, no access in the area

New works

Critical activity: no ODH => no access; no flammable gas detection => no
physics

Red (emergency) Telephones
Alarm Transmission

Includes Beam Imminent Warning issues
O & M – Strong impact on the underground activities (beam & non-beam
periods)
Critical activity: no Evacuation => no access; no BIW => no beam

According to risk analysis and/or HSE spec.
Validated by HSE

Strong collaboration with Fire Brigade

SPS Personnel Safety System

Scope

Replacement of the obsolete access system

For both access control and access safety functions
Primary zones

Why

Reliability; Availability (spare parts)
Commitment towards Nuclear Authorities

From risk assessment to installation & validation

Dismantling
16 Access Points; more than 200 doors
Support required from many groups

Schedule

Experimental Areas PSS

Scope

Primary zones and Secondary zones is no longer sufficient to define PSS functions
The Experimental Areas are today more complex with a large set of risks (higher
intensity radiation from beam, sources, laser, etc.)
Use functional safety methodology as done for the LHC and PS

Starting with Preliminary Risk Analysis, def. of physical barriers, safety functions -> Safety Files

Set up a product catalog and test platform to design and validate Exp. Areas PSS
