INTRODUCTION
The Iditarod is a race to Nome. The race starts at Anchorage. The Iditarod
started when a terrible sickness came. So they raced to Nome to bring
medicine back. That is how the Iditarod started.

MUSHERS
Cim Smyth the musher is 37 years old. He was born in Fairbanks
Alaska. Each musher must take a 24 hour break. His bib number is
28.

DOGS
They wear booties. The mushers start with 16 dogs. They are giant
fluffy dogs. They are 2 times the size of a 5 year old beagle. They
use huskies and Alaskan malamutes.

ROUTES & CHECKPOINTS
 There are 2 routes. The Southern and the Northern routes.

 There are 26 checkpoints on the northern route and 27 checkpoints on

the southern route.

AWARDS
The PenAir Spirit of Alaska Award is given to the first musher to reach
McGrath.
The GCI Dorothy G Page Halfway Award is given to the first musher to get
to the halfway point.
The Red Lantern Award is given to the last person to finish the race.
