DEFINITION
• Inactive Dried Yeast, Brewer’s Yeast and Molasses Yeast are
all the same ingredient, as all of them are made of 100% of
Saccharomyces cerevisiae Yeast.
• Brewer’s Yeast comes typically from a beer fermentation. The
Inactive Dried Yeast coming from alcohol fermentation, either
from sugar cane molasses (Brazil) or from corn syrup (USA)
can also be called as Brewer’s Yeast. In Brazil, the “brewer’s
yeast” coming from sugar cane molasses fermentation is
usually called as MOLASSES YEAST.
• ICC chose the definition of INACTIVE DRIED YEAST for our
“brewer’s yeast” coming from molasses fermentation.

INACTIVE DRIED YEAST
• Inactive Yeast is known for its prophylactic action, increasing
the animal’s resistance to illness and improving performance,
this activity is often referred as “Unidentified Growth Factors” –
UGF.
• Due to its high palatability, Inactive Dried Yeast stimulates the
feed intake.
• Inactive Yeast is a great protein source, with good amino
acids balance and high levels of lysine and threonine and it is
also the best source for natural occurring B vitamins.

ADVANTAGES OF YEAST USAGE
• Sows - feeding the sows with Inactive Dried Yeast increases
the number of piglets born alive, piglets weight at birth and at
weaning.
• Piglets - strengthen the immuno system and increase the
production factor.

Inactive Dried Yeast (IDY) the
improvements on litter weight at
birth, at 21 days and at 35 days

CONCLUSION
• Inactive Dried Yeast, either from molasses fermentation
or from brewer’s fermentation, can be considered an
efficient ingredient for swine, especially for weaning
piglets and for sows, both for its nutritional
characteristics and for its prophylactic action. In general,
Inactive Dried Yeast enhances the immunological
system.
• Several trials showed that Inactive Dried Yeast
decreases piglets mortality and increases weaned
piglets livability.
