Ultramarathon
An ultramarathon is any
running event longer than the
marathon length of 42.195
kilometers (26.2 miles, 45,760
yards).
Two types of ultramarathon events:
running for a specified distance
Two
types
running for a specified time (with the
winner covering the most distance in
that time)
The most common distances run are 50 and 100
miles or 50 and 100 kilometers.
The format of these events and the courses covered
are highly variable and range from many loops run
on a 400 meter track to point-to-point road or trail
races.
Many ultrarunning events are also characterized by
other extreme course obstacles, such as heat, cold,
elevation change, or otherwise challenging terrain.
Many of these races (especially in the
United States) are run on dirt roads or
mountain paths, though some are run
on paved roads as well.
Usually, there are aid stations every
five to fifteen kilometers apart where
runners can replenish food and drink
supplies, or take a short break.
Timed events range from six or 12
hours to one, two, three and six days
(known as “multi-day” events).
These events are generally run on a
track or a short road course, often
one mile or less.

Local athlete wins Four Deserts Race

Taiwan's top marathon runner, Lin Yi-chieh,
proudly unfurled the national flag in the
South Pole after winning the gruelling Four
Deserts Race Wednesday which involved
racing across Antarctica between January 25
and February 1.
The Four Deserts Race, organized by
RacingThePlanet, is a series of races in the
world's four largest and most forbidding
deserts. They are the Gobi March in China,
the Atacama Crossing in Chile, the Sahara
Race in Egypt and the Last Desert Race in
Antarctica. Each challenge a seven-day/sixnight race covering 250 kilometers.
Regulations state that competitors have to
first complete the Gobi March, the Atacama
Crossing and the Sahara Race before
qualifying for“The Last Desert Race in
Antarctica.”Only 15 competitors were legible
for the last race in the South Pole.
Lin ranked third in the Gobi March in 2003,
got his first gold medal in the Atacama
Crossing in 2004 and got a silver medal in
the Sahara Race last year.
In the first-ever“marathon”to be held in
Antarctica, Lin and 14 other foreign
runners competed in temperatures as low as
minus 30 degrees Celsius.
RacingThePlanet organizers were once even
forced to temporarily suspend the race due
to a blizzard that dropped temperatures to
minus 34 degrees Celsius. In the light of
such extreme condtions, runners were
praised for their ability to endure the
coldest, hottest, driest and windiest places
on Earth.
Due to Taiwan's mild weather and not being
able to train in frigid conditions, Lin
familiarized himself with the South Pole's
environment by watching videos, and
whenever cold fronts blanketed Taiwan he
exercised in mountainous regions wearing
only shorts.
Despite his training, he still caught a cold
on the second day of“The Last Desert,”but
continued to win a gold medal.
Lin told local newspapers his most
impressive experience was seeing
hundreds of penguins that he imagined
to be cheering him on and perhaps his
least impressive was having to carry his
own body waste since “artificial
pollution” is forbidden at the South Pole.
Lin also told reporters he plans to cross the
6000-kilometer Sahara on foot in September.
His crossing of the Sahara will be made into a
short film to be named “Running the Sahara”
and it will be produced by Hollywood star
Matt Damon's film company.

Discussion:
You all know that there are TWO
tapes of ultramarathon (one is
running for a specific time, another
is running for a specific distance). In
your opinion, can we classify Lin’s
running? Why or why not?
