Petroleum crude oil consists of four factions, namely oil constituents, resin, asphaltene and pre-asphaltene (ie carbene and carboid). The chemical and physical properties of crude oil depends significantly on the relative amounts of each faction and their properties. The resins contain aromatic or naphthenic hydrocarbons and components of oil factions and may have naphthenic or paraffin structures. Asphaltenes and pre-asphaltenes in their natural state exist in micelle form, peptized with resin molecules.

Asphaltenes and Preasphaltenes in their natural state exist in micelle form, peptized with resin molecules.
