I can describe the relationship between altitude, pressure, and temperature.

1) What are the 4 layers of the atmosphere?

2)Which layer do we live in? Which layer is the ozone layer found?

3)What happens to temperature as you go higher?

4)Good ozone shields what kind of rays? Bad ozone comes from what?

5) Name one good thing about UV rays and one bad thing?

 1) troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere  2) troposphere, stratosphere  3) it gets colder  4) UV rays, cars, power plants  5) good: medical practice, vitamin D bad: damages DNA, eye damage, wrinkles

 Altitude or elevation: the height above sea level   As you move up from sea level the altitude is increasing Air Pressure: the weight of air that pushes on all things  Greatest at sea level because it has the weight of the whole atmosphere on it.

 As you move up from sea level the amount of air pushing down decreases.

 As altitude increases, temperature decreases  As altitude increases, air pressure decreases  http://streaming .discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.c

 Why is the air thinner at higher elevations?

 There is less air pressure and the molecules are spread farther from each other.  At higher elevations you can take the same amount of air in with one breath, but you have fewer oxygen molecules in that breath  This can lead to altitude sickness

1) Where is altitude or elevation greatest? 2) Where is air pressure greatest?

3) Where does air have less mass?

4) Where are oxygen molecules farther apart?

5) Where is the temperature coldest?

6) Where would air seem the heaviest?

7) Where might a hiker have the most difficulty breathing?

8) If air pressure is constantly pushing down why doesn’t it crush things such as a tin can or hollow objects?

9) As you move toward sea level from B to A, what will happen to the air pressure and the air temperature?

  As altitude increase, temperature decreases. The air drops 3º for every 1,000 ft of altitude above sea level.
