Naval airport located near the city on Willington Island could not be developed to handle larger aircrafts due to various constraints such as It was a Defense airport & Restrictions for Night Operations Runway inadequate for operation of larger aircrafts and Geographic Limitations for Airport Expansion Unidirectional operation due to the presence of permanent obstacles Formation of CIAL A Public Limited Company “Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) was Registered on 30th March 1994 with the following promoters 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. K.Karunakaran, Chief Minister of Kerala •Inauguration of Cochin International Airport by His Excellency President of India Shri. K.R.Narayanan on 25th May 1999 •First Commercial Flight operation – Air India’s International flight from Dhahran to Cochin & back on 10th June 1999 •Declaration of Cochin Airport as International Airport Shri.
