The Math Lab at Lake Worth offers a variety of
activities and resources designed to support
classroom instruction and give you the extra
practice you need to master course objectives.
Those activities include:
Practice Tests and Quizzes
Additional Practice Handouts
Seminars
Tutoring Appointments
Recorded Lectures
SI Sessions
To gain the most from these activities,
do the homework assignments first.
If you have questions or need help,
tutors are ready to assist.
• Working in a Study Group is a great way to complete homework
assignments, get help with problems, and receive lab credit at the
same time!
• To receive credit,
You must work with at least one other student. One person is not
a group!
You must present your PantherCard to a tutor at the PantherTrail
Station to be signed in on the computer. At that time, you should
also alert the tutor that you will be working in a Study Group.
When you’re ready to leave, have a tutor initial and stamp your
assignment sheet for the time you spent.
Strategy Seminars are offered on selected days and times and
topics vary throughout the semester. Topics may include:
My Learning Style
Note Taking Strategies
Test Prep and Test Taking Strategies
Math Anxiety
Time Management
Word Problems: Friend or Foe?
Study Strategies
To Think or Not To Think
Procrastinators Anonymous
To Think or Not To Think
>> Strategy Seminars are held in the Think Tank area of the Math Lab. <<
Prep PSS are offered for both Basic
Algebra I and Basic Algebra II. During
these sessions, students
Discuss homework problems
Learn problem-solving strategies
Practice critical thinking skills
Review chapter concepts
Prepare for quizzes and tests
Supplemental Workshops in Math
(SWiM) are interactive workshops
that are focused on specific
sections of math courses that
students tend to struggle with the
most. They are one-hour
workshops, guided by a facilitator,
geared to helping students master
these math
>> Seminars are held in the Think Tank area of the Math Lab. <<
You may schedule appointments in person at
the Reception Desk or by calling the Math Lab.
Appointments last 30 minutes and begin on
the hour or half-hour.
You do not need to schedule tutoring
appointments to receive help! Tutors in the Prep
Room are always available to assist you with
homework and lab activities.
If a tutor does not match your learning style, ask
to see another tutor, or talk to the Prep Math
Learning Specialist. We want you to succeed!
• Students with documented disabilities may
request standing appointments of 1 or 1.5
hours for a total of 3 hours per week.
Appointments are initially set up by a
learning specialist, and are then
automatically scheduled each week.
In addition, you may schedule regular halfhour appointments on days when you do
not have a standing appointment.
• If you must miss class, the first thing we recommend
that you do is to watch the recorded lectures.
• The lectures feature step-by-step worked examples.
They are a great way to study at your own pace!
• The lectures may not be copied.
• Additional Practice worksheets include
several exercises that focus on individual
chapter sections.
• It is best to complete your homework
assignments prior to attempting the
Additional Practice activities.
• In order to receive credit you must complete
a minimum of 2 sections and you must do
this activity in the Math Lab.
• If assistance is needed, see a tutor!
• Initially, you should attempt to rework
your incorrect problems to locate your
own mistakes. If you still need help,
you can get assistance from a tutor in
the lab. A tutor will stamp & initial
your lab assignment sheet once you
have completed the corrections for lab
credit.
– Students that score below a 75% are
recommended to schedule an appointment
in order to thoroughly go over all
corrections.
• The Supplemental Instruction (SI) program at Palm Beach
State College offers students regularly-scheduled, out-ofclass study sessions with an SI Leader.
SI leaders are students who have successfully
completed Palm Beach State College math courses.
The SI leaders will help you get started and guide you
through course objectives.
• If you are enrolled in a Basic Algebra I or II course that has
an assigned SI Leader, you can receive credit for this
activity by attending the scheduled SI sessions. (Check with
your instructor to see if your class applies)
• Don’t wait until the last minute to complete lab
assignments! Each activity will take approximately
one to two hours to complete.
• Statistics show that students who participate
regularly in lab activities receive higher grades and
are more successful in Palm Beach State College
math courses!
