The Family
is the basic social unit in the society in
which a group of people share the same
dwelling place and are related by blood,
economic ties or an interest in welfare of
the members.

 Procreate and nurture
 Provide food and clothing for their family members
 Provide shelter
 Love and support
 Socialization, the family is where a person learns to
become a social being and interact with others.

in adult hood.

The Nuclear family is two parent and their children.
Members share
the same home
and corporate for
the benefit of all
the family.
Eg the daily task around the house are
shared and every one is expected to
make a contribution towards a happy
family life.
The extended family

Members of an extended family may include
grand mother, parent, children, aunts,
uncles, cousins, step – parents and so on.

With changes in the attitudes of our society and more relaxed
divorce laws there has been an increase in the number of
single parent families. They can be headed by men as well.

This also is a nuclear family where young children who
are left without any support from their own family are
looked after by a married couple who may or may not
have children of their own.
Sibling Family

 A sibling family is family of children with no adults.
Older children look after their younger sister and
brothers when parents have migrate to find work and
they are not part of a strong extended family. Parents
may also die leaving the older children to take the
responsibility of caring for the family.

This is a nuclear family in which two people
who are already parents come together. They
may have split up from their former partner
or their first partner has died.

age, with the same status and
interests.

ground. Children are exposed to another
means of socialization when they start school.
This means or agent is the peer group.

should try very hard not to get involved in
activities which they know are wrong just
because members of their peer group are

Some older children join gangs. Gangs may
make people feel good about themselves at
times when they are growing up and facing a
lot of changes.

 They plan mischievous things to do and get into trouble
wit the law at times.
 In their minds they are brave and dangerous.
