Power Requirements
• Customers expect longer standby / talk times
– Was 24, went to 48 hours, now at least a week!
• Customers want faster recharge times
– Was 8, went to 2 hours, now want even less!
• Handset builders must compete!
– Can’t afford to add in anything that draws power
• CoolRunner-II Features make the difference!

Competitive Differentiation
• If you just use the vendor chipsets, your add on
options are restricted to those planned by them
• Your phone will be just like your competition’s
• So goes your pricing and hence your profit
• The key to success in the cell phone market is
product differentiation
• CoolRunner-II lets you break away from the
crowd
Quick Start Training
Where CoolRunner-II Fits
• Interfacing
– RAM
– EPROM
– ASSPs
• Cameras, GPS, MP3, ASSPs
• Power management
• Security
– See “Cell Phone Theft” and “CoolRunner-II Security”
for more detail

The Future
• 4G is supposed to be Software Defined Radio
– Strange title, in that 3G already has multiple
processors, and current 4G proposals resemble
vector processors! (should be Processor Defined Radio)
– Bandwidth will be a challenge
• Imagine streaming video, with Turbo FEC, compression and
encryption all pipelined
– Battery life will also be a challenge with that
bandwidth
– Pricing will then be the ultimate challenge
Quick Start Training
The Future Continues
• Software Defined Radio may be the ultimate in
algorithmic flexibility, but will be unable to change
its hardware configuration . . .without a little help.
• The problem with the future is its unknown
• CoolRunner-II CPLDs adapt to future I/O ports,
memory types and ASSPs and still not deplete
batteries!
