The Play of the Diary of Anne Frank Act 2, Scene 2 Act 2, Scene 2: • Although everyone is worried about Mr Kraler - who has been admitted to hospital there is growing excitement at the possibility of an Allied invasion of the Netherlands. Act 2, Scene 2: • Although Anne isn’t in love with Peter, she is very happy to have him around. • Mrs Frank is worried that Anne will expose herself to criticism and unpleasantness from Mrs van Daan because of her relationship with Peter. Act 1, Scene 3: • The themes that are explored through the characters and incidents in this scene are: – Conflict – Triumph over Adversity Questions & Answers: • Why is Margot jealous of Anne? – Margot is jealous that Anne has something to look forward to each day and feel excited about. • What does Anne mean when she says that she will have to “run the gauntlet”? – To run the gauntlet means to navigate yourself through difficult and treacherous obstacles. In Anne’s case, it is Mrs van Daan that she must get around safely. • Why is she criticized for visiting Peter’s room? – Mrs van Daan criticizes Anne for dressing up and suggests that it is improper for a girl to call on a boy. She feels that it is inappropriate for young people to be alone together and suggests that they are doing more than “talking”.
