Foreign language teaching BUSINESS ACADEMY RUZOMBEROK SLOVAKIA SLOVAKIA – a country in the heart of Europe Ružomberok Ruzomberok a small town in the north of Slovakia EDUCATION SYSTEM IN SLOVAKIA AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING Schooling starts in elementary schools consisting of two stages: 1st 1 - 4 grade 2nd 5 – 9 grade - compulsory learning a foreign language from 5th grade of elementary school - in 2007 - New concept of teaching foreign languages in primary and secondary schools was approved by the goverment and introduced to schools in September 2008 - since 2008 teaching two foreign languages has been compulsory 1th foreign language from 3th grade and 2nd foreign language from 6th grade - 1st foreign language – most of all English or German - 2nd foreign language – English, German, Russian or French After finishing 9th grade pupils transfer to a secondary school of their choice which can last from 3 to 5 years BUSINESS ACADEMY AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES - a four-year secondary school which provides a complete secondary specialized education in the field of economic subjects, specialising in accounting (bookkeeping), economics and enterpreneurship - school was established in 1992 and the Russian language has been taught since 2004 - teaching foreign languages starts in 1st grade and finishes in the 4th grade by passing a school leaving exam called MATURITA - pupils learn 1st foreign language – Eng or Ger and 2nd foreign language - Eng, Ger or Rus NUMBER OF LESSONS PER WEEK 1st foreign language 2nd foreign language Conversation lessons (1st for.language) 4 3 _ 3 3 2 3 2 2 3 2 2 1st grade 2nd grade 3rd grade 4th grade FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN 2010/11 Class 1st foreign language 2nd foreign language Conversation lessons Eng Ger Eng Ger Rus Eng Ger 1.A 28 - - 28 - - - 1.B 16 8 8 16 - - - 2.A 29 - - 13 16 29 - 2.B 19 11 11 19 - 19 11 3.A 31 - 31 - - 31 - 3.B 11 20 20 - 11 11 20 4.A 35 - - 21 14 35 4.B 14 22 22 - 14 14 22 Total 183 61 92 97 55 139 53 FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS • 21 teachers work at school, among them 7 teachers of foreign languages 5 English teachers 3 German teachers 1 Russian teacher • two teachers teach 2 foreign languages (Eng-Rus, Eng-Ger) ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS Textbook+ workbook + CD GERMAN TEXTBOOKS Textbook+ workbook + CD RUSSIAN TEXTBOOKS Textbook+ workbook + CD The Common European Framework of Reference • teaching 1st foreign language is finished in the 4th grade with a school leaving exam called Maturita at the level B1/B2 according to The Common European Framework of Referance for Teaching Languages • teaching 2nd foreign languge is finished in the 4th grade аt the level А2/B1, a school leaving exam is voluntary SCHOOL LEAVING EXAM FROM FOREING LANGUAGES In 2004 a Rehearsal Examination of Each pupil has a possibility to a New Concept of School Leaving choose the level of examination either Examination was implemented B1 or a higher level B2 Maturita exam consists of two parts: 1. EXTERNAL PART - Test : includes 3 parts Listеning comprehension Language in use Reading compehension (duration: 100 min B1/ B2 120 min) % 2. INTERNAL PART Oral exam: (20 min) 33,3% - visual input (5 min) - discussion about a topic of 25 topics (10 min) - simulation /role play (5 min ) 30% Writing – letter,essay (60 min) at least 180 words When teaching foreign languages we can use other computer classrooms FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOMS Four classrooms for teaching foreign languages: two classroom with a videoplayer, CD-player and maps two classrooms with an interactive board LANGUAGE COMPETITIONS OLYMPIADS Our pupils take part in language olympiads The school organises school rounds, the best pupils go on to regional rounds. Our achievements 1st place in a regional round of the German language Olympiad (2009) 2nd place in a regional round of the English language Olympiad (2007, 2010) School participation in projects • in 2006 four our pupils together with a teacher participated in a project in Ancara, Turkey which was called „Sports against xenofobia„ • in 2007 one pupil escorted by a teacher participated in a project called „Diversity is our strength" in Armenia Pupils of our school take part in different international projects Participation in different competitions • Students of our school are interested in events taking place in the European Union and therefore they participate in different competitions with concern of the life in the European Union. • A reward for them is often a stay in various countries of Europe where they have a possibility to use their language skills in practise. Тhat kind of the reward was a stay of two our students in Strassburg in 2008 or in German Weimar where a student of ours spent a week. Thank you for your attention!
