Our Founders
1960: Our first facility is in the
backyard of a house in
Karlsruhe, Germany. The
company produces magnets
and power supplies.
Professor Dr. Gunther Laukien
• Created first high-resolution
systems for analytical
chemistry.
• Recognized the power of
nuclear magnetic resonance
1960
1970
(NMR) and the need for
impulse
spectrometer.

• Established Bruker September 7, 1960.
Dr. Emil Bruker - Co-Founder
• Professor Laukien was prevented from using
his name commercially by academic
agreement. Therefore, Dr. Bruker’s name
was used when the company was formed.
1964: Fourier Transform (FT)
research leads to significant
increases in sensitivity.
1960: The first NMR, KIS,
is created, operating
at 25 MHz.
Early 1970s: Sales offices
are established throughout
Europe, USSR, Australia
and China.

1974: IFS 110, Bruker’s first
FT-IR spectrometer is
introduced, launching a very
successful product line.
1990
2000
1970’s: First commercial 300
MHz NMR.
1977: Bruker
Meerestechnik
established for small
submersibles, oil
exploration and tourism.
Late 1970s: Tomography
systems for clinical and
pre-clinical applications
lead to whole-body clinical
MRI instrumentation.

1960
1980: Bruker acquires
Dr. Franzen Analysentechnik which
adds quadruple mass
spectrometers to 1970
the portfolio,
including the MM1, the first mobile
detection system.
1988: Introduction of FTRaman Product Line by
Bruker Optics.
1980
1983: The first whole body
MRI tomographs with air
coil magnet reflect Bruker’s
new focus on pre-clinical
1990
systems.
1988: Delivery of the first
TOF-1, includes Neutral
Desorption Ion Source
followed by Multi-Photon
Ionization MUPI.
2000
1982: Bruker
Spectrospin develops its
first commercial FT-ICR:
2010 Beyond
CMS-47.
1980’s: Development of
first automated NMR
systems with
Autosamplers.
Early 1990’s:
Development of
CyroProbes for NMR.
1990: Bruker enters the
ion mobility spectrometry
market.
1992: First
REFLEX
MALDI-TOF.
1960
1970
1993: Launch MultiProbe
Ion Source for up to 10
samples on one target.

1994: Launch of
SCOUT-26 Ion Source
with X-Y movement
stage.

1994: First commercial
ion trap system with
electrospray source
introduced.

2000: First shipment of
the bench-top ion trap
system, esquire3000.

2000: Bruker begins a process of
expansion. Bruker Daltonics and
AXS combine in 2003 to a single
corporation. By 2008, all Bruker
units are combined, including
Bruker Optics and Bruker Biospin,
into a single public
company ― Bruker Corporation.
