United Way Campaign
2014 Captains’ Training
Campaign: Oct. 6 - Oct. 17
Osborn HS
• Stepha’N Quicksey is a 2013 graduate of
Osborn Collegiate Academy of
Mathematics, Science, and Technology
in Detroit.
• Currently a sophomore at Grand Valley
studying public and nonprofit
administration.
• Interned as a student advisor for the
Skillman Foundation's Social Innovation
unit, where he helped influence the
work of the Foundation from the
perspective of a young person.
• Has held other youth leadership roles
with Skillman.
• Dreams to Reality: Last December, Stepha’N hatched a plan
while in his Grand Valley living center. Instead of leaving school
or moving home for the summer, he decided that he would
organize a conference for young Detroit leaders.
• His idea grew to become the Detroit Youth Leadership
Conference, held in Detroit in August 2014. It joined youth from
across Detroit with city leaders from the Mayor’s office, City
Council, Police Department, and leading nonprofit organizations.
The goal of the day was to put youth perspectives on Detroit
issues front-and-center.

START WITH WHY
“People don't buy what you do;
they buy why you do it. And
what you do simply proves
what you believe. We are

good at communicating what
they believe.”

Special Thanks to Bryant Domina and his students from the Region III
Transition Program, a program that serves students with mild to moderate
mental impairment between 18-21 years of age!
Every year, Bryant brings a group of students to Grand Valley’s Campus to
assemble your United Way captains packets.
This activity is gratefully appreciated by our Campaign team and equally valued by
providing an opportunity for community service.
According to Bryant, “one of the highlights of our year has been to assist with the
United Way project via GVSU. Our students love the challenge, to be able to spend
time on campus, and to truly feel like they are helping someone else out.”
