Thinking Outside The Room

Presenter: Don Uvick

The Lightroom 5 beta program is available to the public. Anyone with an Internet connection can download it and start putting it to the test. You do not need to own (or have tried) a previous version of Lightroom. You can download the beta and use it until the product expires on June 30, 2013. To Try Lightroom 5 beta: http://bit.ly/Lr5beta You may also be interested in watching some Lightroom 5 Beta videos. If so, go to the Lightroom YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_profilepage&v=s2xNLS0KjcY Also, as with all beta software you may enounter a bug or two. One has already been found and a “temporary fix” is available at : http://www.slrlounge.com/how-to-fix-the-lightroom-5-beta-startup-crashing-bug More details about this Lightroom 5 can be found at : http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom5 /

       Designed for nondestructive editing Does not contain actual photos Catalog is just a database containing information about your photo Backs up catalog not your photos Don’t move or rename files outside of Lightroom Does not match your camera’s rendering when working with raw files Don’t ignore the histogram!!!

    Import shortcuts of your images.

Go to the Preferences and Catalog Settings to make sure the settings are what I want for your images. To make initial browsing faster, create 1:1 previews on import.

Accept the default to delete these large previews after 30 days.

The Workflow (Develop: The Basics) • Sophisticated Develop algorithms which extends the dynamic range of digital images • One recommendation is to follow LR’s lead • Work from the top down with the sliders. Tweak them as needed.

Develop (Histogram)

Keep an eye on the histogram

• • • • • Controls highlights, shadows, contrast and overall brightness of image Plots data in terms of brightness of pixels Shadows (darkest portions) - Left side Brightness (brightest portions) – Right side Clipping: detail lost due to blown out highlights or too dark shadows

Develop (White Balance) • • • Adjust to reflect lighting conditions Choose a preset Use White Balance Selector Tool (neutral light gray) • • Adjust Kelvin color with t emperature scale (cooler or warmer) Adjust Tint to compensate for green or magenta tint

      Exposure   Adjusts overall brightness of image Numerical values are equivalent to exposure values on camera with a range of 5 stops    Moves the entire histogram with some change in shape Darkest tones are lightened more when moved right than with the Highlights slider Moving Whites is similar but gives more aggressive changes Contrast   Adds contrast mainly to midtones of image Dark areas get darker/Light areas get lighter Highlights    Stretches out the histogram and leaves the very lightest or darkest tones anchored right brightens the lighter areas left tones down the lighter areas Shadows   slider right lightens the darkest areas and to the left darkens them Significant moves protects the darkest and lightest tones  Softens tonalities of an image and provides virtual fill flash Whites  Controls white point (brightest part of image)  Be careful not to clip highlights Blacks   Adjusts black point (darkest point of image) Be careful not to clip shadows

   Contrast    Controls midtone contrast Move left reduces the midtone contrast and can create a smooth finish/dreamy effect Move right increases midtone contrast and create a sharpened image Vibrance   Non-linear adjustment: less saturated colors get more of a saturation boost than those colors that are already saturated Built-in Skin Color Protector (filter out colors falling within skin color range) Saturation   Linear adjustment: Overall boost to colors Useful for making BIG shifts to saturation

   

Selective White Balance Adjustment Selective Noise and Moiré Image Soft Built-in Email Functionality One Click Chromatic Aberration Removal

    LR is a Photographers Digital Darkroom BUT, Lightroom is really for everyone Additional features go beyond a standard workflow What else can LR do?

 Organize your life    Share your interests Integrate your business … and more!

     Digital Asset management (DAM) Helps download, rename, backup, rate, group, catalog, filter, archive and keep track of all audio, video, images, catalog, any kind of files in organized manner which may be scattered across several hard drives Easily create image submissions for clients Works as a gateway to glimpse files Develop a file redundancy – in case LR goes away  Parent – Subfolder – File (year - When/Where/What - When/Where/What)

        If your camera has built-in GPS, your images will be encoded with GPS coordinates Click the folder containing images and then the “Map” shortcut on the top menu Lightroom displays the global map, with pinpoints on where the images were taken. You need to be online to see “Google” maps because you are unable to cache this information View map as street view, hybrid, roadmap, satellite, terrain or light/dark Grid View contains marker for those tagged with GPS data Adding GPS data will not change original EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data. You must export (with location data) to make it GPS coordinates permanent.

     Go to All of your photos or to a collection Use navigator to move around the large map You will want to check and see which images have GPS and which do not Look at Film strip of images in your collection for a particular photoshoot (e.g. Pittsburgh)   Tagged – has GPS Data Untagged – No GPS Data Select untagged       Drag and drop if see location on map If can’t see location then search map and type in Pittsburgh Select Pittsburgh PA (Yellow marker appears on map – see map key) Zoom in and be specific Drag/Drop onto location shown by yellow marker on map Click on marker and see photos

  To tag images you can:  Past from website or other document   Type the actual address if you know it for specific locations Drag and drop images to this marker.

If this is an area you photographed often or wish to return then…  Save this as a new location  Location marked with circle which can be repositioned

Manually Add coordinates     Select an image or images that you want to tag with GPS data Go to the Map, select an area on the map that you want to GPS-tag Click “Add GPS Coordinates to Selected Photos” GPS coordinates will be written into the file metadata.

Reverse Tag your photos

  Uses a track log from GPS device or Iphone App  Import/load GPX track log into Lightroom     If format is not GPX then use “software “ to convert Synch time zone and date stamp ( camera <> Lightroom) BEFORE going out on photoshoot) – Otherwise need to change or edit capture time in Library module to match up with log.

Auto Tag images using track log Auto-lookup on locations to place on map and write address and country into photo metadata GEOTAG Photos Pro or device which outputs GPX track log (e.g. App to track long bike rides)

    Garman GPS devices     Google Maps and Garmin Basecamp MapSource RoadTrip EasyGPS File Convert other format e.g. GPS Visualizer IOS or Android applications   GPS Cycling/Bike Trackers GeoTag Pro NOTE: If you take a photo before the “camera” has achieved a satellite lock, the resultant photo may contains the coordinates of the previous location!

        App to Geotag your photos Available for IOS and Android Synch camera with App Review App settings Start recording and take photos Upload Trips to PC (tracklog) Load Tracklog within LR View trip in LR Map Module
