What is Orchid?
An European initiative from process industry company
experts involved in the development and usage of standards and
practices for exchange and storage of product and plant data.

Support and improve interoperability of dictionaries and
standards currently in use in process industry communities

Initiate realistic and practical joint industry projects in line with
individual company requirements and plans


Vision
Companies in the process industries shall be
able to share and/or exchange electronically
the information needed to design, build,
operate and maintain process and power plants
using internationally accepted standards
USPI
Goal is not to define new standards – but
(1) make existing standards interoperable
(2) if possible, support harmonization

Need for change

The process industries requires




Current situation:



13 Dec 2006
concerted actions between a number of actors
 Plant owners and operators
 Contractors
 Suppliers
 ….
Communication across the plant life cycles
 Plant design, engineering, construction, operation and
maintenance
Data archiving for 40+ years
Diversification of data
Different data models, lots of problems in data handover
Lack of automation in business processes

How ready is industry I

Different communities use different standards, e.g.




eCl@ss is used for many market places and is integrating
German classifications (ETIM, Proficlass, …)
ISO 15926 is the basis for many developments in oil and gas
data exchange
NAMUR / Prolist has defined NE-100 for engineering processes
to build and maintain chemical plants
PIDX is the basis for procurement processes and data
exchanges in oil and gas

Within communities: working processes, data exchange
according to agreed standards

Across communities: communication is much more difficult

Strategic objectives

Achieve critical mass in process industry in Europe and
integrate it with global activities

Understand the plant supply chains, the actors,
interoperability of methodologies for classification, for the
exchange and storage of equipment data, and for business
processes and their interoperability needs over the life cycle
of a plant

Aim at a gradually establishing communication across the
communities building on their existing capabilities
interoperability of methodologies for classification, for the
exchange and storage of equipment data, and for business
processes

provide a European policy forum for interoperability and
harmonisation matters

Practical steps



13 Dec 2006
Identify areas with the highest added value
Create matrix of focus areas
Demonstrate the feasibility of advancing the level
of interoperability by means of two or three pilots
