History of Jan Kriel School
1925: Jan Kriel, at age 16, died from epilepsy
1937: Jan’s parents, with the help of the church, started
an institute to care for children with epilepsy

was begun
1985: The school also included learners with other
special education needs

The Association of Friends of
the Epileptic child was started in
1949, in order to raise funds and
create awareness
And with these funds big building projects
were taken on and completed between
1950 - 1985
At Jan Kriel School we strive to empower
learners with epilepsy and special
education needs
Special education is about 4 times
more expensive than mainstream
education. Jan Kriel School is only
partially
subsidized. Friends’
