Mineral Potential

 The metallogenic map of Suriname shows various occurrences of minerals.

 Of major economic importance is the greenstone belt for primary gold and other deposits.

 The main metal bearing pegmatite bodies are found in north east Suriname. Cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, beryl and amblygonite have been mined.

 Other base metal occurrences such as: Fe, Al, Au, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cr and other minerals.

The Greenstone Belt

Suriname's gold deposits are part of the Guiana Shield, a geological formation Greenstone extending over 415,000 km 2 of Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil. In Suriname, the Greenstone belt covers 24,000 km 2 in the east of the country (Figure left).
