Awareness on Human Trafficking.
Facts about Human Trafficking
Facts About Human Trafficking
 Bureau of Public Affairs
Washington, DC

[PDF]
What is human trafficking?
 Trafficking in persons is modern-day slavery, involving victims who are
forced, defrauded or coerced into labor or sexual exploitation.
Annually, about 600,000 to 800,000 people -- mostly women and
children -- are trafficked across national borders which does not count
millions trafficked within their own countries.
 The UN estimates [conservatively] that over 700,000 people per year
are trafficked globally and the revenue generated is close to (US) $10
billion. (Department of Justice, Canada, 2005)
John R. Miller, director of the U.S. State Department Office to
Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, said that research
conducted by the United States estimates that sex slavery is the
third largest source of revenue for organized crime after the drug
trade and the arms trade. "Sex slavery -- which includes children -- is
now a major source of revenue for organized crime, probably netting
$6 or $7 billion a year," he added.

What needs to be done?
 What are the Trafficking Victims Protection Act and the Trafficking in Persons Report?
One of the key components of the law is the creation of the Trafficking in Persons Report.
The Department of State produces this annual report assessing government response in
each country with a significant number of victims of severe forms of trafficking in persons.
Countries in the annual report are rated in tiers, based on government efforts to combat
trafficking.
 What do the tiers of the Trafficking in Persons Report mean?

 Information regarding these questions will
be shared at the Symposium Tea,
Saturday, May 26, 2007, 3:30 p.m. @
the Doubletree Hotel,


Congress passed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) in
2000 and strengthened it in 2003. This law provides tools for the
U.S. to combat trafficking in persons, both domestically and abroad.
In October, 2001, President Bush signed the Trafficking Victims
Protection Act. The Act provides a range of new tools for the
protection of, and assistance to, victims of human trafficking. [Remarks of the
honorable Deborah J. Danels, Assistant Attorney General Office of Justice Programs at the Conference on
Child and Family Maltreatment. Protecting Our Children: No Job For The Lone Ranger on Wednesday,
January 28, 2004 Sandiego, California]

President Bush signed the Protect Act into law on April
30, 2003. His remarks at the signing ceremony and an
official statement on the Act are available on the
Washington File at http://usinfo.state.gov/ (search
keyword "Protect Act").
