collage –
A picture or design created by adhering such basically flat
elements as newspaper, wallpaper, printed text and
illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc., to a flat surface,
when the result becomes three-dimensional, and might also be
called a relief sculpture / construction / assemblage. Most of
the elements adhered in producing most collages are "found"
materials. Introduced by the Cubist artists, this process was
widely used by artists who followed, and is a familiar technique
in contemporary art.
"Collage" was originally a French word, derived from the word
coller, meaning "to paste."
montage – photomontage
A single pictorial composition
made by juxtaposing or overlapping many pictures or
designs. The art or process of making such a composition.
Also, a rapid succession of different images or shots in a
movie.
relief sculpture –
A type of sculpture in which form projects from a
background.
There are three degrees or types of relief: high, low, and
sunken. In high relief, the forms stand far out from the
background. In low relief (best known as bas-relief), they are
shallow. In sunken relief, also called hollow or intaglio; the
backgrounds are not cut back and the points in highest relief are
level with the original surface of the material being carved.
assemblage sculpture –
A three-dimensional composition made of various materials
such as found objects, paper, wood, and textiles

Hannah Höch on Dada Photo Montages
“Actually, we borrowed the idea from a trick of the official
photographer of the Prussian army regiments. They used to have
elaborate oleolithographed mounts, representing a group of
uniformed men with a barracks or a landscape in the
background, but with the faces cut out; in these mounts, the
photographers then inserted photographic portraits of the faces
of their customers, generally coloring them later by hand. But
the aesthetic purpose, if any, of this very primitive kind of photo
montage was to idealize reality, whereas the Dada photo
monteur set out to give to something entirely unreal all the
appearances of something real that had actually been
photographed....
Our whole purpose was to integrate objects from the world of
machines and industry in the world of art. Our typographical
collages or montages set out to achieve this by imposing, on
something which could only be produced by hand, the
appearances of something that had been entirely composed by a
machine; in an imaginative composition, we used to bring
together elements borrowed form books, newspapers, posters,
or leaflets, in an arrangement that no machine could yet
compose.”

“My aim is the total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), which
combines all branches of art into an artistic work .... First I
combined individual categories of art. I have pasted poems from
words and sentences so as to produce a rhythmic design. I have
on the other hand pasted up pictures and drawings so that
sentences could be read in them. I have driven nails into pictures
so as to produce a plastic relief apart from the pictorial quality of
the paintings. I did so as to efface the boundaries between the
arts. ” Kurt Schwitters
