COMPLEX-CAS kick-off meeting
1000-2100 Monday September 26, 2011
At the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters
Drammensvegen 78, Oslo
This meeting marks the beginning of the Complex national network
(www.complexphysics.org) stay at Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) at the
Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters for the academic year
2011/2012.
Eleven scientists from abroad will be at the Complex-CAS for shorter or
longer time periods during the period August 2011 – June 2012
During this period there will be organized 8 workshops on various topics
within soft and complex matter physics.
In the present kick-off meeting, post.docs and students from the Complex
network (UiO, NTNU and IFE) will give short-talks presenting ongoing
research.

+ Invited guests
Complex group work during 3 hours, 1600-1900 September 26, 2011:
Group theme, see table on next page.
Discuss: What can your group do to improve the world?
Goal: Make a 2 page project proposal + a PPT presentation
What to do?:
A. (~1 hour)
Mapping of background knowhow in the group:
 Short presentations, each max 2 min.
 Common themes
- Scientific keywords
- Research tools used by group members
 Free flow of ideas for common project work
B. (~2 hours)
i) Define and describe one common project by making a project description (docpdf):
This should contain (max 2-3 pages):
 Project goal
 Tools needed
 Tasks to do
 Manpower
 Table with estimated budget
(Fex: a postcoc position or PhD position is about 1 MNOK/year)
ii) Make draft of PPT presentation for your project.

Example of a project description that doet NOT improve the world?:
Aristotele:
Probable impossibilities are to be preferred to improbable possibilities.

Science never solves a problem without creating ten more.
