Bakgrunn
Anatoli Mikhailov er rektor ved det hviterussiske eksiluniversitetet European Humanities
University i Vilnius.
Universitetet EHU ble grunnlagt i Minsk i 1992, men ble stengt av myndighetene i 2004. Med
bl.a. støtte fra EU og Nordisk Ministerråd ble universitetet igjen åpnet i Vilnius fra 2005, og gitt
status som et privat litauisk universitet i 2006. Om lag 2000 studenter er tilknyttet universitetet,
mange i form av fjernstudier. En del uteksaminerte har reist tilbake til Hviterussland for å arbeide
for det sivile samfunn og uavhengig presse, mens andre forblir i Litauen og andre europeiske
land.
Rektor Mikhailov, ledsaget av Vice Rector for Academic Affairs og Vice Rector for Development
and International Relations, vil ankomme Oslo 26. juni og være i byen til 30. juni. Konferansen
han deltar på, går av stabelen i Helga Engs Hus på Blindern 27.-29. juni og har tittelen
“Reimagining democratic societies: A new era of personal and social responsibility?“.
Konferansen er et samarbeid mellom Universitetet i Oslo, Europarådet og US Steering
Committee of the International Consortium for higher Education, Civic Responsibility and
Democracy. Arrangør er Europarådet og The European Wergeland Centre (EWC).
