language teaching in France.
As always, TESOL France is very proud to offer you a truly innovative event, which focuses on inspiring
English teaching and learning among young learners and teens. With something for everyone, there will
be thought-provoking talks, poster sessions and hands-on workshops exploring a variety of themes
related to innovative approaches with young learners of English.

We are honored to welcome Dr Annamaria Pinter, an Associate Professor at the Centre for Applied
Linguistics, University of Warwick, UK. In her plenary, Dr Pinter will share some personal messages about
inspiring children and teenagers in language classrooms and offer 10 lessons that teachers can take away,
try out and adapt in their own classrooms.

What is TESOL France?
TESOL France operates through an Executive Committee of volunteers responsible for organizing
events, publications and membership. TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages)
France, an affiliate of TESOL Inc. and IATEFL, is a non-profit organization of teachers of English in
France. Its purposes are to stimulate professional development, to disseminate information about
research, books and other materials related to English language teaching, and strengthen instruction
and research. We regularly organize high-quality events which are opportunities to keep up-to-date
with current trends in teaching, share knowledge and experiences and to meet and network with other
teachers.
We also have correspondents in the different sectors (primary, university, etc.) who keep us informed of
the preoccupations and needs of their sector.
Membership is open to anyone involved in the English Language Teaching (ELT) industry, both in France
and abroad. Our members include teachers, lecturers, teacher trainers, academic managers,
researchers, authors, publishers, testing agencies, company founders and institutions.

More and more teachers all over
the world recognise the value of
using authentic storybooks to
teach English to children. In Paris
we decided to go one step further and tap into
our early years and young learners’ natural
curiosity, imagination, creativity and energy to
create a programme which developed the whole
child. In this hands on session I will give real
examples of how art, sport & yoga can be
incorporated into story book based courses and
give teachers the opportunity to try out and
share their own ideas and experiences.

Marie-Hélène Fasquel
This talk will enable you to discover
a truly engaging and innovative ESL
project and to learn about the web
tools which were selected to
implement it with 15-year-old
students. The whole project helped
the students defend the
environment thanks to ICT in an international
context. It encouraged creativity, sharing and
collaboration. It was awarded one of the 5
UNESCO Innovation prizes in March 2013. It
has been selected to compete at the Global
Forum from March 11 to March 15, 2014 in
Barcelona. 250 worldwide projects were
selected out of 23000 applications. The
presentation will be followed by a question &
answer session. Feel free to join us!
Marie-Hélène Fasquel is an ESL teacher, ICT
and teacher trainer. She will teach at the Ile de
Nantes International Lycée next year. She has
taken part in the Innovative Teachers Forum for
the last four years and her latest project was
awarded an Innovation Prize at the UNESCO
Council, Paris. Her specialist area is primary,
although she has been involved in both teacher
training for French early years’ and teaching a
new early years programme. She is passionate
about using story books to teach English and set
up an association, The Story Seeds, in 2009,
giving workshops to teachers and children.

aux enfants. A Paris, nous avons décidé d’aller
plus loin et de puiser dans nos premières années

global de l’enfant. Dans cet atelier pratique
l’intervenant donnera des exemples concrets
expliquant comment l’art, le sport et le yoga

les histoires et de donner aux enseignants la
possibilité d’essayer et de partager leurs propres
idées et expériences.

Présentation d’un projet innovant en France
pour les adolescents. Défendons
l’environnement et soyons créatifs !
Cette présentation vous permettra de découvrir
un projet innovant et motivant mis en œuvre
dans deux classes de lycée (Seconde) en anglais
et de prendre connaissance des outils web qui
ont été sélectionnés pour le mettre en œuvre
avec des élèves de lycée. L'ensemble du projet a
permis aux élèves de défendre une cause,
l'environnement, grâce aux TICE dans un
c o n t ex t e i n t e r n a t i o n a l d e p a r t a g e s e t
d’échanges. Il a encouragé la créativité, le
partage et la collaboration. Il a été primé lors
des Journées de l’Innovation de l’UNESCO le 27
mars 2013 et sélectionné au niveau
international (Barcelona Global Forum du 11 au
15 mars 2014.) L'exposé sera suivi d'une séance

Children experience a wide
range of feelings, emotions,
and moods while learning a foreign language,
which lead them to create long-lasting mental
models about language uses, learning methods,
and their own linguistic competence.

degree in Pedagogy from the Catholic University
in São Paulo (PUC-SP) and a Masters in
Education in Human Development and Applied

One of the biggest challenges
both teachers and educators
are facing on en everyday basis
is keeping our students
engaged in order to, hopefully,
make them better speakers, better listeners,
betters writers and better readers in English.
Based on my daily experience as an ESL teacher
in a rural secondary school (Collège Jean
Monnet, Broons), my presentation will explore
the notion of “project building”, within the
classroom, as well as, on a larger scale, beyond
the boundaries of the classroom.

and singer-songwriter from Brittany. He has a

Comment optimiser l’interactivité, la créativité
et la motivation des élèves en classe de langue
vivante.
Au quotidien, l’un des défis majeurs pour les
enseignants/éducateurs est de conserver intacte
la motivation de leurs élèves, dans le but d’en
faire des personnes qui parlent mieux, qui
comprennent mieux, qui écrivent et qui lisent
mieux en langue anglaise.
Basée sur mon expérience de terrain en tant
qu’enseignant d’anglais dans un collège rural
(Collège Jean Monnet Broons), mon
intervention aura pour thème principal l’idée de
création de projet, au sein même de la classe,
mais aussi plus largement, en dehors des
frontières de la classe.
Les trois axes que je développerai auront tous
comme point commun l’idée du voyage. Le
voyage est polysémique, et peut être vu sous des
angles différents.

10 ideas to help you inspire yourself and your
learners
In this plenary talk I will share some personal
messages about inspiring children and teenagers in
language classrooms. Even though every teacher will
ultimately have to work out their own way of
becoming ‘inspirational’ in their own classrooms, in
this talk I would like to offer some concrete ideas that I
have found inspirational in working with teachers and
young learners, and suggest that at least some of
these ideas can be useful to others. My ideas have
come from 15 years of researching and studying child
second language learning and working closely with
English teachers from all over the world as part of my
job at the University of Warwick. The talk will
summarise my messages as 10 lessons that teachers
can take away and adapt/ try out in their own
classrooms. Concrete ideas, activities and examples
will be used to illustrate the core messages, and in
some, where this is possible, teachers in the audience
will be able to explore and experience these ideas
through active participation.
Dr Annamaria Pinter is an Associate Professor at the
Centre for Applied Linguistics, University of Warwick,
UK. She lectures at Masters and Doctoral levels and
supervises theses in the area of teaching languages to
children. She has published widely in the area of
teaching English to young learners. She is the author
of Teaching Young Language Learners Oxford
Handbooks for Language Teachers, Oxford University
Press (2006) and Children Learning Second
Languages, Palgrave Macmillan (2011). She is also an
editor of an e-book series entitled Teaching English to
Young Learners.

Jo Budden: LearnEnglish Teens: A global online learning community for teenagers.
Themes: Teenage Learners and Technology in the Classroom
Promoting a particular book or product.
LearnEnglish Teens is the British Council’s website
for teenage learners. This talk will examine how and
why teenagers interact and exchange ideas on the
website. We will explore the language learning
opportunities this provides and we will also look at
what else the teenagers are learning, apart from
English, by communicating with their peers from
around the world

présentation va examiner comment et pourquoi les
adolescents interagissent et échangent leurs idées
sur le site web. On va explorer les différentes

Beata Budzynska: “Let's move” – designing engaging language games for young learners
Themes: Primary learners and Teenage Learners
Promoting a particular book or product.
The workshop explains the basics of Game Based
Learning, a method that focuses on implementing any
learning objectives into a game. We will explore the
mechanisms behind the games, in context of young
learners' specific needs and how to implement them
into the ESL practice. We will present games for
learning via movement for learners 2-9 and more
advanced solutions for teenagers. All solutions will
be supported by practical DIY tips.
Cet atelier va expliquer les bases de l’Apprentissage
par les Jeux, une méthode qui met l’accent sur la mise
en œuvre des objectifs d’apprentissage grâce à
n’importe quel jeu. Nous étudierons les mécanismes
derrières les jeux dans le contexte des besoins des
jeunes apprenants et comment les mettre en place
dans le contexte de l’anglais langue étrangère/
seconde. Pour les enfants âgés de 2 à 9 ans, nous
présenterons les jeux pour l’apprentissage de la
langue à travers le mouvement et des solutions plus
avancées pour les adolescents. Toutes les solutions

Erica Dawson: 21st Century Skills: Learning and Teaching for the Future
Themes: Teacher Training and Development and Speaking Skills
Think back about 20 years. Few people had mobile
phones. Even fewer had internet access. No one had
even heard of Google, emailing, or WIFI. What will
the next 20 years bring? And how can we prepare our
students? Instead of focusing on technology today,
teachers can focus on skills needed in the 21st
century: critical thinking, communication,
collaboration, and creativity. This presentation will
look at how teachers can develop these skills in their
classrooms easily and confidently, integrating them
with the teaching of language and the development
of the 4 traditional skills.

Gail Ellis: 25 years of storytelling in France and beyond
Themes: Primary learners and Teacher Training and Development
The teaching of English to children continues to
expand worldwide. However, there is a great deal of
variation in policy so children receive language
learning experiences of varying types and quality. Consequently, teachers find themselves with diverse
classes with differing levels of English. Storybooks
offer an ideal solution - all children are able to
understand the overall meaning of a story with the
support of storytelling techniques and the
accompanying illustrations. Each child can then
respond according to their own linguistic level and
cognitive ability. In this talk, I will demonstrate the
competencies required to successfully implement a
story-based approach.
L’enseignement de l’anglais aux enfants continue à se
répandre mondialement. Cependant, la
méthodologie et la qualité de l’enseignement pour les
enfants varient beaucoup car les politiques de
l’enseignement sont très variées. En conséquence,
enseignants se trouvent avec des diverses classes de
niveaux d’anglais différents. Les livres de contes
offrent une solution idéale, tous les enfants peuvent
comprendre l’histoire globale d’un conte avec l’aide

This is an interactive, no, active! workshop in which
the participants will be encouraged to try out 10
activities that will help to get teenagers in large
monolingual classes to speak in English. The activities
proposed are the ones that the speaker has found
really work in her long experience working with
teenagers in monolingual classes: in UK, Belgium,
France, China and the Pacific. Some are stolen from
others, but adapted - credit will be given where due and others are original creations ...

Nayr Ibrahim & Sophie Handy: Assessment for Learning: taking the pain out of testing!
Themes: Language Testing and Primary Learners
Assessment for Learning (AfL) is a holistic approach
to assessing students’ progress, which engages
students more deeply in the learning process. It
doesn’t exclude tests, but includes a wide range of
activities to be assessed (tests, classwork,
homework, project work, student presentations)
through an on-going, interactive dialogue between
teacher and student. AfL gives the teacher a deeper
understanding if his/her students, and gives the
students a clear learning path with explicit learning
objectives, clear success criteria and positive,
constructive feedback.
AFL (Evaluation pour Apprentissage) est un
approche holistique afin d’évaluer le progrès des
étudiants en les impliquant plus profondément dans
le processus d’apprentissage. Les examens ne sont
pas exclus mais incluent une plus grande gamme
d’activités pour évaluer (des travaux pratiques, des
devoirs, du travail de groupe et des présentations),
ainsi que par l’évaluation continue et le dialogue
entre les étudiants et les professeurs. AFL donne à
l’enseignant une compréhension plus profonde de
ses élèves et cela donne à l’élève un programme

Michaela Kirchem: Lessons learned: Designing and producing a teen syllabus and materials

There are many reasons for an institution to opt for
designing and producing their own materials rather
than working with published materials readily
available on the market. This presentation will take a
detailed look at a material writing project tailored to
suit the specific needs of a teaching institution. The
project brief was to designing a course covering the
levels A1 to C1 suitable for international teenagers
on two-week language learning vacation. Join this
presentation to find out more about the obvious and
less obvious project stages and challenges for
everyone involved in a "publish-your-own" project.

Queenie Tan: The Hills Are Alive! : Using Music In The Kindergarten Classroom
Themes: Teacher Training and Development and Listening Skills
Swiss Psychologist, Jean Piaget theorized that young
children go through the Sensory Motor Stage,
meaning that they rely on a combination of sensory
stimulation and movement as a means of learning
about the world around them. With this in mind,
well-implemented music and movement activities
are instrumental in teaching English as a second
language. During this talk, we will explore the
benefits and roles that music and movement play in
the development of children’s language skills. We will
also look at some tips on enhancing the music and
movement activities within the kindergarten
classroom.
Jean Piaget, le psychologue Suisse, avait la théorie
que les jeunes enfants passent par une période
d’intelligence sensorimotrice, ce qui veut dire qu’il
pensait qu’une combinaison de stimulation

This workshop aims to give you a lot of practical tips
to help those students in your class who have
dyslexia. First we will look at some of the general
problems that these students have and simple ways
to help them. Then we will look at different methods
to make the learning of vocabulary easier. This will be
followed by ideas on how to make grammar
memorable by using pictures, diagrams, movement,
songs and games.

four-step method is based on the importance of
developing awareness of FORM, MEANING, and USE
of the target language, which is achieved when
instructors P.A.C.E their lessons.

l’enseignement de la grammaire représente un grand
défi. Donc, c’est nécessaire de trouver des pratiques
qui inspirent nos apprenants et de se sentir à l’aise

Lynne Diaz-Rico: Translanguaging Places--Past, Present, and Future--through Intercultural Blogs
Themes: Teenage learners and Technology in the Classroom
Writing from the heart evokes the deepest, most
motivating communication. This workshop draws on
the semiotics of place to provide a structure for
intercultural communication. Participants
experience a seven-level model of semiotic
awareness, keyed to seven levels of English language
development… a development that honors the roots
in first language while giving wings to the second
language growth. Meaning builds upon meaning as
participants create texts that are grounded in their
own local, semiotic cultural knowledge. Participants
learn to create and enjoy intercultural blogs as a way
to share translanguaged insights across and between
students of different cultures.
D’écrire de nos cœurs évoque la communication plus
profonde et plus motivante. Cet atelier s’appuie sur
la structure de la communication interculturelle. Les
participants vont expérimenter un modèle de sept
niveaux d’une connaissance sémiotique, s’accordant
aux sept niveaux du développent de la langue
anglaise… un développent qui respecte les racines de
la langue maternelle en donnant des ailes à la
croissance dans la deuxième langue. La signification
