The three words これ、それ、and あれ translate into English as
“this (thing),” “that (thing),” and “that (thing)” respectively.
Notice that それ and あれ both translate as “that,” but they
have two distinct uses in Japanese. Their proper use is based
on the relation of the object being talked about to the speaker
and the listener.
