Aid for Ebola Epidemic Victims
Bishop Conlon has asked the churches
in the Diocese of Joliet to collect money
the weekend of January 10 - 11 for
Catholic Relief Services, the international relief agency for the U.S. Catholic
Church. These funds will assist Catholic Relief Services in fighting Ebola, and
help the affected communities to confront the threats caused by its spread.
Because Sacred Heart Parish has already scheduled the
quarterly St. Vincent de Paul Society collection for that
weekend, the second collection will be to support our
SVDP Society. (You will see the purple envelopes in
your packet that is mailed to your home.)
To support the Ebola victims through Catholic Relief Services, please use the special red and white envelopes
that you will find in the church pews the weekend of January 10 - 11, and please put them in the first collection.
Please make your checks payable to: CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES. These contributions will go directly to
the Diocese of Joliet.

The Epiphany of the Lord
Giving Tree Thank You!
A big thank you to all the parishioners from Sacred Heart
Parish for your constant generosity! The Giving Tree
Project was successful again this year because of your
loving kindness.
Thirty-five families were provided
Christmas gifts and gift cards to purchase a
Christmas meal this year. The true meaning of Christmas of sharing God’s love and
being Christ-like to others by helping those
in need was demonstrated by you all!
Starting next year, a Giving Tree committee will be formed from interested volunteers. We will have a few meetings and
have chairman positions for different responsibilities so
stay tuned. An article will be in the bulletin giving details
in the coming months. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
The concerns for non-violence, sustainable development,
justice and peace, and care for our
environment are of vital importance for
humanity. They cannot, however, be
understood apart from a profound reflection upon the innate dignity of every human life from conception to natural death: a dignity conferred by God
Himself and thus inviolable.”

Young People, “ July 17, 2008

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the
first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration
when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous
birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we
are given examples of role models of those who trusted in
God. More than examples of those who trust, they are
models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the
world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can
make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn
death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who
can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world.
This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do
each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think
things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise.

Epiphany celebrates the wake-up calls of life, the showings of God’s majesty and power in the person of Jesus.
The feast alerts us to look for signs of the Lord’s grace
and action in our lives today. In this context, the call of the
Second Vatican Council to reform the sacramental life of
the Church, including our pattern of care for the sick, is
indeed a holy awakening.
Prior to the 1960s, our care for the sick had collapsed in
the popular imagination into something everyone called
“last rites.” An immensely complicated ritual, with anointing accompanied by quickly muttered Latin prayers, was
enacted for a marginally conscious person at “death’s
door.” By the time a priest was called, the sick person
might not be able to receive viaticum, or derive much personal benefit from the ritual. The healing effects of the
sacrament, investing suffering with the dignity of a link to
Christ’s cross, and the immense assurance of forgiveness
for a person reviewing the life journey, were hidden. Suddenly, an epiphany swept through the Church, and the
way we care for the sick was utterly transformed. It took
several centuries, however, for the Church to reach that
moment of renewal.

St. Raymond of Pennafort
Patron Saint of Canonists (Feast day - January 7)
Born in Spain, St. Raymond was a relative of the King of
Aragon. From childhood he had a tender love and devotion
to the Blessed Mother. He finished his studies at an early
age and became a famous teacher. He then gave up all
his honors and entered the Order of the Dominicans.
St. Raymond was very humble and very close to God. He
did much penance and was so good and kind that he won
many sinners to God. With King James of Aragon and St.
Peter Nolasco, he founded the Order of Our Lady of Ransom. The brave religious of this Order devoted themselves
to saving poor Christians captured by the Moors.
Once he went with King James to the Island of Majorca to
preach about Jesus. King James was a man of great qualities, but he let himself be ruled by passions. There on the
Island, too, he was giving a bad example. The saint commanded him to send the woman away. The king said he
would, but he did not keep his promise. So St. Raymond
decided to leave the island. The king declared he would
punish any ship captain who brought St. Raymond back to
Barcelona. Putting all his trust in God, St. Raymond
spread his cloak upon the water, tied up one corner of it to
a stick for a sail, made the Sign of the Cross, stepped onto
the cloak, and sailed along for six hours until he reached
Barcelona. This miracle moved the king. He was sorry for
what he had done, and he became a true follower of St.
Raymond. St. Raymond was one hundred years old at
the time of his death.
National Migration Week
January 4-10, 2015:
“One family under God”
Join the Catholic Church of the
United States in celebrating National Migration Week. This year
the theme is “One Family under
God,” which brings to mind the
importance of family. This reminder is important when dealing
with migration, as family members are too often separated from
one another for long periods of
time. We pray through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph who
had to cross the boarder into Egypt with Jesus to escape
death.
